What is it like........

...........to travel I 95 from Richmond, VA to Jacksonville, FL? We will be leaving Williamsburg soon and are considering the long way home. Helps with places to stay and places to avoid would be appreciated. Information about I 95 and its condition would also be helpful.

Stiles, we haven't driven that stretch in 2 years, but at that time the road was good, traveling easy. We stayed at the Fayetteville KOA and it was a very positive experience (like many others, we are not usually KOA'ers). The pull-thru site was plenty long and wide enough, pea gravel, level, great managers. About 1/4 mile off I-95, but no road noise. Again, 2 years ago. Last year we stayed at Green Acres Campground in Walterboro, SC. High tree cover, long dirt pull-thru. It was only overnight, didn't unhook. It was fine and we would not hesitate to stay again. Hope this helps!

Stiles,

We usually stay at the South of the Border Campground going both ways. Full HU very reasonable and paved pull thru sites sites with 24 hr security.
The park is behind the service station and away from the road noise.
Flying J is just a little ways down 95 S.
This is about a days drive from Williamsburg at the SC and NC line.
You should make reservations this time of year if you go here. 1800-845-6011 http://www.woodalls.com/search/camp/...rtiserTypeID=1

I hope you enjoy the 18 wheels being bumper to bumper along this streach. At least they were when we came through a few months ago, the road was okay. Remember to fill up before you hit Florida. Oh, South of the Border is okay for an overnight, just don't go out to eat there, food is awful.

The big thing diesel is cheeper in sc than GA...GA and FL are about the same price , if you want to get off I 95 and see the country look at 301 from sc to baldwin, fl its slower but piece and enjoy ,, if you want to run 70 to 80 run I 95 but you will have every car, boat truck, bus and hay wagon pass you at 80 miles ph ,,, its a good rd but fast and you are in the way at 65 or 70 and you will get the finger once in a while,, sailer
ps we drive it a lot to go to asheville, nc without the 5th wheel so i know its either fast or dead stoped as last sat we lost 3 hrs on I 95 till i could get to 301 in ga as all 3 lanes were stoped 21 miles into ga sailer

It's been 2 years for us, too, but what I remember most is how many semis there are on that road and they're all in a big hurry. If I recall, they cannot use the left lane when there are more than two lanes in a direction and thus the middle lane becomes their passing lane. They don't like us blocking that lane for them. But the road surface was pretty good as I recall. But, again, that was two years ago.
