Cimarron to Eagle Nest NM
Is it safe to drive this mountain pass or do I need to go through Taos? I have a 3931FB. Thanks

I drove it in reverse last year and went on from Cimarron East on highway 58. I think it is pretty flat. I think from Eagle Nest to Taos is quite narrow and winding with slower speeds (35-45?) but no problem if following speed limits.

Eagles nest to Taos is narrow, winding, and through a mountain pass. I used to ride those roads on a bicycle doing the enchanted circle tour of 100 miles total. I would not be pulling my montana over that way to taos. Even going over the other pass down into red river would not be a fun thing to do. That road is wider and less winding, but it is an exciting drop into red river. I used to do about 60 mph when i let the bike run...most times I kept it to 35 or so.

It appears there may be confusion here. On searches there are 2 Eagle Rest (or Eagles Rest). One on highway 64 East of Taos near Cimarron, and one SW of Taos. I was speaking of the one on highway 64.
I just checked pictures of that stretch. There are some 20mph hairpin curves, many S curves, many hills and little straight stretches. However, there is some gorgeous scenery. If you are experienced in mountainous driving, this is a very scenic route. If you are at all squeamish about narrow and curvey, it may not be for you. Oh,by narrow, I just mean there is no wide shoulders, etc; but the road is a standard width state highway.

We did Eagles Nest to Cimmeron a few years back in the summer and it was not a bad drive.

We came up thru Taos from Santa Fe stayed on the 64 and it was no problem that way. I am sorry but I never went the way you would like to go. Does New Mexico have 511 for highway information. If you do maybe ask them. But anyway safe travel's how ever you go.
PS>>> Eagles nest is great. We stayed at Angels Nest RV park. They have 60 sites with full hookups. When we were there 13 years ago or so it was very nice. We also just looked them up on Google they are at 4.5 star's

Probably 84. It crosses 64 and runs down thru Santa Fe. Easy to mix up from memory or a quick glance at a map. Actually the same highway thru Chama.

I am sorry. I was talking about from the part of 64 that run's from Taos to Eagle's Nest. I have not been there in 13 years or so.

We stay the summers in Eagle Nest, for the past 20 years and since we live in Amarillo, Tx we always come through Cimarron canyon.
It's an easy pull with our big old Montana.
You don't say where your traveling from but if your coming from the Texas Panhandle area then I would suggest you come via Raton since the road from Springer to Cimarron is narrow and rough.
At the moment you should know that the state park is closed to camping and the lake is closed to fishing but all the private RV parks are open for Business.

taos to eagle nest
As a NM resident, I took that exact trip last year in a 35ft 5er, not a problem just control the speed. We stayed at Angel Fire great RV park. I was not impressed with the ones in Eagle nest. When we left I took 64 to Cimarron then 58 to the interstate then south, much better drive. When we go back, I'll go in on 58.
