Grand Tetons Planning

Planning a trip to Grand Tetons sometime next year and would like some input as to what's the best time of year to go.

I think in the fall. The end of September to mid October. If you go take a day trip up on Union Pass. I think it is the prettiest place in Wy. You can get to it from Pinedale or Dubois.

I highly recommend the Tetons! We've been once and they are on our list to go back. We like them MUCH better than Yellowstone (that's just our opinion). Very majestic and inspiring. This from people that live 5 miles from the base of Pikes Peak.

We went the first two weeks of September. Problem with that area is that many things start to close down in mid September. Right after Labor Day it was not crowded there or Yellowstone.

We have been in that area several times. My recommendation is late August to early September. Expect some snow and cool weather but the animals will be out with the young that were born in the spring. The National Park Service did a wildlife tour and we really enjoyed it--hope it is still offered. Check out our trip journal for photos and comments.

I can see the Grand from my home and spend a lot of time on both sides, Idaho and Wyoming. Although I live in Idaho, the Wyoming side is my preference. I too would plan for August - September time frame. Jenny and Jackson lakes are beautiful but may get a little chilly in September. Colter Bay is a nice place to stay with all the amenities but a little pricey at $65 per night.

Mid-June is a great time for the Tetons. Lots of moving water from the winter thaw. Wildlife active all over the place. Take the boat across Jenny and hike up the slopes for awhile. Could be the best visit you will ever have. Don't get too close to the bears!!
