The SCR doesn't know or care about the quality of the DEF. Nor is there onboard NOX sensors to determine if the DEF rate is reducing the amount of NOX. The only way to test the effectiveness is via a Smog check (be sure to ask Volkswagen how they handle this situation).
Actually my RAM Cummins has TWO NOx sensors in the exhaust stream.

GM also uses NOx sensors. Had to have both replaced on my previous 2011 because they were defective and over time started kicking false emission codes.

I was wrong about the DEF system It indeed has NOX sensors and alters the amount of DEF depending on the NOX levels detected.

Here is a link to a good explanation of the system

I am scheduled to get my 2019 3500 reprogrammed, i was curious as to if you noticed any change to your truck after the upgrade. Let us know once you get some feedback.
Thanks in advance

is this something I need to look into... getting my 2020 reprogrammed. how do you know if you need to have it reprogrammed? is there somewhere to check the current version number and what the new release is?

Yes, the new one's do use more than the previous 2017-2019. I have 3000 miles on mine and I had to add 5 gallons of DEF. This seems to be the norm and it uses more when towing. I'm on the Diesel Place forum and others have stated the same on DEF usage in the new truck.

The new Chevy/GMC diesels are flat out awesome. The Cajon Pass is a joke with the new 10 speed..........I normally tow at 65mph, so I don't get run off the road, but if I have to pass, this new truck just gets up and goes. Going out June 15th down to San Diego. I'm almost sad I have no good hills to tow up

Cook-Den, I had that TSB done a few weeks after it was announced. I noticed zero difference in the performance/DEF usage/fuel mileage.

I got a call from the service manager at my dealership informing me i needed this done. If you call your service manager he will look up your VIN and let you know. actually any service manager can find this out with your VIN

That's weird, cause my On-Star diagnostic report said there was nothing needing to be done on my truck and there are no updates needing to be done. I'll call the service manager in the morning.

Called my GMC dealer today, I do have updates. The one update he mentioned was for the DEF and Regen cycles. He said the computer is using to much DEF and the regen cycles are too often and there is a software update to address these issues. Heading in first thing in the morning.

Called the dealership I bought the truck from and there were (5) updates needing to be done. I attached what they did. The service rep said the truck was perfect and all the computer upgrades went as planned

What's funny is, the On Star diagnostic report you get every once in a while said everything was ok with my truck and nothing needed.....Glad I called the dealership and learned otherwise. Maybe that is the reason I never keep my On-Star after the initial purchase.

Yeah and if you go through the infotainment system it says everything is up to date, well on what can be updated over the air. One thing he did say or call this was a recall... you would think onstar would know about this if that’s actually how it’s classified.
