Quartzsite and Gray water dump

I saw this article and figured it may effect some at Quartzsite. It states government regulations for dumping "gray" water on the BLM.

Basically what it is saying is that you can't dump your gray water at Quartzsite because it is part of the long term visitors area. "Yuma BLM District". At least that is the way that I read it.

But we camp in the short term area, so are we exempt?

The whole Yuma BLM area includes Quartzsite and there are (as stated) special rules about dumping any waste water. That is why you see all the pumper trucks around the various (long and short term) camping sites. Yet one can dump all the gray water you want on BLM land around Tucson according to the rangers there.

I suspect the concentration of campers in Quartzsite has a lot to do with the stricter rules.

Hmm. So, does that mean I have to lay out my hose at night, dump, and put away the hose?

I think it means you should put a sprinkler on the end of the hose.

We are in long term and at night you can see some campers running a hose from there gray tank over the wash into a hole. you know the ranger is in bed at that time anyway.

I want to know what Back-Packers, Tenters, or older Pop-Ups do?? No holding tanks for either Gray or Black water. I know in our tent days, a coffee can was used at night and dumped outside the tent, Pop-Up we used a Port-a-Potty, but Gray water was caught in a bucket and dumped on nearby trees or bushes. Does that mean they will be fined? Would like to make it to Quartsite, but not this year.
Just wondering out loud....

Sounds like we can dump our gray water as long as we dig a hole or water a plant. Did I miss something? In California, when we used to camp in tents (19-- TO 1970's), we could dig pit toilets, as long as we were a certain distance from any natural water source, and dispose of just about anything(trash)as long as you buried or burned it. It is a totally different story today.

Yup! Basically, the BLM prohibits dumping gray (or black) water on BLM land in Quartzsite even though it is permitted on other BLM land around the country. Special rules apply in Q.

Thanks Carl,
I re-read it and saw where I missed the info about the "Q".

At Quartzsite on the BLM land, there are numerous "Potty" trucks, and they can be at your site within the day.

From what I can find in the BLM websites, there are 2 separate Long-Term camping areas within the Yuma BLM District. The northernmost one is the La Posa Camping area. The description of that area places it 2 miles SOUTH of I-10. We will be 5 miles NORTH of I-10. That puts the Circle outside the prohibited areas.
