Dodge 2003-2009 Safety Recall H46
SAFETY RECALL H46 - MOPAR STEERING LINKAGE
I received this notice, took truck to deal and was clear: OK.
The Service Writer told me (my words please read recall) there are two types of steering linkage one where the damping shock is attached with a "U" bolt or two where the damping shock is attached with a "through bolt". Mine had the through bolt and no problem.
If you have any doubt, I suggest you look up the Safety Recall H46 and get it checked at a dealer.
Cheers,

My 09 had the U bolt. Total technician time was about 20 minutes. I think dealers love these recalls as they give the service dept. something to do. John,
Your description of the recall was much better then the service writer at the dealership.

Dltto for the heads up John, had the recall notice but if I dont address it immediately, it seems to slip my mind, I tend to chalk it up to a good memory but short.

Thanks, John. I'm going outside right now to see if I can tell which mount ours uses. Our next mail shipment arrives Wednesday so we'll likely get the notice then or the following Wednesday.
Just checked ours. Through bolt through one end. Through bolt through a U-bracket on the other.
If I read that recall correctly, it's for 18,000 units that have had an aftermarket steering linkage repair "service" done to them. Since we've not had that, I may not get a recall. If I do, I'll take it in anyhow, just to make sure we're ok.
Thanks for the headsup.

Steve, My recall read just like yours and I was somewhat amazed by the wording since my truck only had 6 miles on it before I test drove and bought it. I couldn't figue why the dealership would have done a repair on a truck with 6 miles on it. As previously stated mine needed the "fix" of the recall. I wasn't in the service area to witness them applying the fix but was told it was needed and done. I think the wording on the recall must be incorrect. Jim C.

H. John Kohl thanks for the information, I called the number on the NHTSA tag you put on your post, and called Chrysler they asked for the last 8 numbers of the Vin, and checked my truck for any recalls, it came back clean, thanks for the heads up, I sure dont need to loose my stearing at any time.

If you want to check your Dodge vehicle for recalls go to this site. All you need is the last eight number of your VIN.

I have an '03 Dodge 2500 and received the recall notice but I would like to check it out myself before I allow anyone to fiddle around with my truck. Could anyone tell me what the damping shock is and where it is located? If it has the through bolt I guess I'm okay since I've been to 49 states with 193,000 miles on the truck since I bought it in '03. Thanks for any help offered.

I have not yet received the recall notice and couldn't get that link to work. I checked around and was able to enter year, model, and last 8 digits of the vin and found I will be getting that recall notice. I will have it checked, just in case (thanks, Jim).
Don, I'm not sure why your link wouldn't work for me.
Here's the link I used.

The online version of the recall notice says to contact your dealer right away if you had any steering linkage repairs after March 1, 2008. It also says the linkage may have been replaced during other maintenance by the dealer. So, even though I don't think it applies to mine, I'll have it checked anyhow. The thought of a steering failure is too daunting for me to assume mine is fine.

The site is the home page of Dodge owners. That is a good find. I will have to save it to my favorites.
