Ford F250

Hi MOC group.

I have seen a lot of posts about TV's. And the Ford F250 is mentioned a lot but I haven't heard anyone say they have one like mine.

The sticker says: 2002 SD F250 4X2 Supercab-XLT 158" WB Styleside-7.3L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel-Elect 4-Speed Auto Trans.Then under "Optional Equipment it has "Camper Package"-Trailer mirrors-Trailer Towing package-3.73 Rear end-Transmission cooler-LT265/75RX16E OWL All-Season Tires-Deluxe Aluminum Wheels.

When I asked what "Camper Package" meant...the salesman said that this F250 was called a "Camper Special." With extra rear leaf springs and a transmission cooler for heavy towing (5th wheel?)and that it essentially had the same towing capacity as an Ford F350.

Has anyone out there heard this "Camper Package" description before? All I know is that it tows our 2008 3400RL like a champ.

Yes, I had a Ford exactly like that. It did the job for me on my first Montana. I guess the only difference is that mine was a crew cab rather than a super cab. The 7.3 L engine is a very good and stable engine. I got about 11 MPG towing and 20-22 not towing on the highway. Mixed driving town and open road was 18-19 MPG. The only trouble I had was a blown torque converter gasket. When it was repaired, Ford put a cooler on it to cool the transmission fluid. It towed just fine after that. You do need to do your math to make sure you have enough truck for your trailer of choice.

I have the same truck only a 2001 model. I now have 105K miles on it. It handles our Montana with ease. I did have to install Firestone Ride-Rite air bags to hold the TV and 3295RK level. Prior to buying the Montana I had it chipped to increase HP & torque to pull SOB. It felt like it had more wind resistance and was harder to pull than the Montana. Stiles quoted mileage numbers, mine are identical. I also added gauges to monitor turbo and transmission temps.

Only problem I've had is replacement of the CPS, once after failure and the second time on recall from Ford.

Camper Package, means your truck is equiped to haul a slide in truck camper.

When I purchased the 3400RL it had the MorRyde pin and the dealer installed a Husky hitch. They commented after we hooked it up as to how level it rides. I assumed it was because of the beefed up suspension.

I have 63,000 miles on it now. At about 55,000 the transmission went out. No power...almost got hit crossing a two lane highway. Then it was Ok...then it would do the same thing. Took it to the Ford dealer. Yep, it was a transmission problem....yes and no. As I said in the specs...it has an "Electric" 4-Speed Auto Trans. Since it was the computer that supplies electricity to the transmission shift valves..it wasn't covered under warranty. Cost me $900.00 to replace the computer.

That has been the only problem so far...knock on particle board.

Yep, the camper package has nothing to do with towing...other than it might reduce tow capacity do to the added weight.

Actually, it does help towing in that it has the extra leaf in the springs. The F250 springs then are identical to those in the F250. The towing difference is that the cargo capacity is higher than on an F250 without the camper package and it reduces the likelihood of any rear end sag when you add the pinweight to the truck. I had the camper package on one of my Fords.

Count the leaves in your rear springs then compare to another F250 without camper package. And then compare to a standard F350 and you'll see what I'm talking about. That extra leaf provides the cargo capacity to handle a slidein camper. Or additional cargo, such as pinweight.
