North to Alaska
We have been accepted for a park host position in North Pole Alaska. Will be there June 1 til Sept 1. Can anyone help me figure out how long it takes to get there with the Monty. I usuually drive about 12 hrs per day. Scenic stops will slow us down. I will start studying the Atlas. We have never been up there so I'm excited.

You will enjoy the trip up there but since you have to be there for June 1, there is the possibility of having to tow the Monty through some snow. We had left Saskatoon, Sk. the third week in May 2009 to go to Anchorage and ran into snow in northern BC. Although there was about 6 inches of snow on the road, we never had to use 4X4, just slower traveling. PM or email me and I'll try my best to help you out as we've been to Fairbanks twice and also the trip to Anchorage and Homer, Ak.

how long from where? from the states i'd figure at least a week. you'll enjoy it, just take your time and drive as the road permit. remember to figure everything is 20-30% more expensive.
have fun.

I checked my mapping pgm and it is about 2200 miles from the border near Seattle. That is going west from Prince George and then north. Most of the time you can drive 50-55. A 110 mile stretch north of Whitehorse you probably should go about 20-25 (I found out by experience).
So you can calculate how long it takes.
But are you sure you shouldn't have left already??

Are you trying to just get there or sight see on the way. There is a big difference. If sightseeing, you should go up the ice field parkway. We were there in 2014. I would figure 200 to 300 miles per day. From Haines Junction to the Alaska border is brutal. We bought a new set of springs (along with many other people) on that stretch of road. Enjoy the North Pole. Lots of good day trips from there - Denali, Delta Junction, etc.

Even driving a car through Alaska/Canada I drove no more than 8 hours. You are planning 12 hours a day and it will wear you out. This is not a drive you want to rush. Take your time. There may be all kinds of causes of delay. We encountered bad portions of road, bad traffic, lane closures, bad weather and especially the unpredictable animals on the road and will get out of the way when they want to. I hope you can add a couple of days to your trip just to get there. We averaged about 450 miles/day and that was a car, and a minivan, and we didn't go as far as you are planning.
You will enjoy the trip. It's breathtaking and expansive.

Enjoy the trip and let us know how it went. Some of us may want to make the trip latter.

My wife and I did the Alaska trip last year 81 days 11,250 plus miles , coming from Minnesota you should know what frost heaves are , up there they are the norm markrd with red flags, cones , orange paint on the road , or not at all , worst road we hit was from Kulane lake to Tok ( it was under constuction )
one thing that I should mention the only credit cards Canada will take are the chip card and let your card company know you are going, and check if they charge an international fee for transactions, we used cap one and no fees and email notification of charges with the conversion rate allready done
If you have questions pm me I will give you my phone #

You will love the drive. We went up in 2011 and came back down in 2015. Our stops northbound were Edmonton, Ft. St. John, Muncho Lake, Whitehorse, Tok and Anchorage (Fairbanks for you). We stayed in RV parks every night with no reservations, but it was late in the season. These were 8-12 hour days with a 2-day stay in Whitehorse for a sanity check (and a brewery visit). We preferred to leave between 6:00-6:30am and shut down between 2:00-5:00pm. The roads can be bad in parts, but not as bad as most imply. Just take your time and you will be fine. Early in the season the roads will be a little rougher as they will not have been repaired yet. Remember, the frost heaves that are marked are not the ones you need to watch out for; it's the ones you see, but aren't marked that will take out your springs. Slow and steady through these areas and you will be fine. Fuel up at every town, even if you are only at a half a tank. Better safe than sorry. You already have the parkway bible (the Milepost). Learn how to read it and have your navigator track along with you as you go. It has some fun interesting facts in it.
Coming back we came down the Ice Fields Parkway through Jasper National Park. If you don't go up through there, definitely come back down that way. The RV park in Jasper is outstanding.
