SELF DEFROSTING FRIG

We have used our unit continuously for 6 months. The frig appears to be self defrosting in the main section. Freezer will need to be defrosted but water drips off the coils in the main section. Everything is cold and appears fine. In our other units, we had to defrosted every few months. Is anyone else experiencing this? Ours is an early 2005. Nothing in the directions that came with the frig about this - just how to defrost.

we had ours on for 6 months straight without shutting it off, but at the end there was alot of ice built up. I think if I had the humidity switch on sooner, we probably wouldn't have had that problem.

I defrost mine just as soon as there is a 1/4 inch of ice on the walls. I boil a pot of water put a tea towle in the freezer and set the pot on it and shut the door. It don't take long for the ice to melt, then I just wipe it out. But it will take longer with a lot of ice in the freezer. I was visiting a friend who is also a full timer who will remain nameless that had so much ice in their freezer it was hard to get anything in it. I said to my self that I would never let mine get that much ice in it,so I defrost mine every couple of months.

Parrothead,

This surprises me. I know on the Camping World website they advertise a Dometic side by side refridgerator as the ONLY frost free RV fridge.

It lists for close to $4,000. I would give Keystone a call. (curious minds want to know) Mine has water that drips off the coils like yours, but I still get frost build up. I defrost mine like Linda does and often.

Ours has been on for 4 months. There is frost on the back of the freezer but the fridge coils are frost free and the fridge is plenty cold. I don't know how this is but we love it

We have found that it depends on the outside humidity as to how often we have to defrost the fridge or freezer. Camped in Wisconsin it needs attention often, but camped here in Nevada we go for months without defrosting. When it is time to defrost, Mary uses a blow dryer to melt the ice build up away, takes about 10 minutes on the fridge and about 20 minutes for the freezer. We also have a cheap refrigerator thermometer from restaurant supply to monitor the inside temp. during very hot days and periods of overloading.

Vicki also uses a hair dryer and defrosts it rather quickly, enough so that she doesn't have to do anything special with the food while it's out of the fridge and freezer. The manual says not to use a hair dryer but I think that's because you can overheat it and cause damage if not careful. If careful, it has worked fine for us.

Something I learned awhile back in this forum that is not generally known -- supposedly these refrigerators cannot be temperature adjusted. However, in the fridge, on one end of the fins is a white tab that will slide up and down the fin. That does change the thermostat setting. I can't recall which way is colder but I moved ours and it really made a difference.
