New Addition to 5er - Pellet Grill

For Christmas, DW got me a Pit Boss Table Top Pellet Smoker/Grill - went out Monday and just got back this afternoon. The Pit Boss was the hit of the trip. Friends took their camper also.

Monday - Filets - OMG GOOD
Tuesday - Baby back ribs - another winner
Wednesday - chicken quarters and afterwards did backed potatoes

We ate like famous people. It full supports why I threw the gas grill out.

Yum! And the food doesn't taste like propane either.

Sound like a great trip......I'm sure the neighbors camping were jealous of the great smell coming from your campsite.

I am glad you like your Pit Boss I have a Traeger at North home in Washington and another at South home in Phoenix area. Last purchase was a Pit Boss Tailgater from Walmart that was on sale two years ago on our way home from Lincoln City Labor Day trip. Works great and folds down fairly easy for storage. Actually get hotter than the Treagers as you can open the metal cover and have flames to sear the meat. It works great but is heavy enough that having some help in putting it back in the storage compartment is nice. I can do it myself but it would be nicer if I had the big sliding storage tray. Than it would be quite easy to put away by yourself. Glad you enjoy your new pellet grill.
Happy and safe roads to you.

This is great to hear! I've thought about getting a pellet grill/smoker for the rig too.

I've looked at the ASMOKE AS300. On Amazon, it has better reviews than the Pit Boss. They spec out almost identically, except that it looks like the ASMOKE can handle taller things in the grill part, since the lid is a little bit taller.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08JCQ4C79...NrPXRydWU&th=1

It would be interesting to know how any of these tabletop models actually does smoking something? That's what I would be most interested in doing. Setting up something to smoke, and then going out on the boat all day, and coming back to smoked, whatever...

ASMOKE has more options. PB Table TOP can be purchased for lower $$. After 10 smoke events, I would feel comfortable leaving it to cook. Getting a meat wifi meat probe is highly recommended. What I've learned is cooking to internal temperature has best results. 205 on pork butt makes it good pulled pork.

So do you have an ASMOKE AS300?

No, I have the Pit Boss Table Top. I have tables in the camper so the Tailgater was more that I needed. A 10lb Pork Butt fits easily. Or two Baby Back Racks

Duh... That was a dumb question on my part. You started the thread!! I'm awake now. SMH....

From what I've read, the grills are the same size between the AS300 and PB table top.

You indicated that the AS300 had more features. What does it have that the PB doesn't?

In looking at their website (AS300) a taller lid is available but out of stock right now.

One difference it appears between the two is that the ASMOKE is a PID controller. I've never owned a pellet grill, so I don't know if that's necessary or not. The ASMOKE comes with a temp probe too. That would be handy for smoking, but a wired temp probe works too, its just one more thing you have to take, though...

We bought a smallish Traeger in 2016 and love it. We have to take the legs off in order to transport it, so we take it when we winter in Florida, but on shorter trips we take the portable propane BBQ.

We love the Traeger, and they do make a portable model, but we opted for a slightly bigger one instead. We use it at home a lot in the good weather.

Our builder got us a Green Mountain Daniel Boone for a housewarming gift. It worked so well that we bought a GMG Davey Crockett for our Montana. It has WiFi and temp probe. If you shop at Costco, they have a triple blend cherry, maple and apple Traeger pellet that we use. I think they all do the same job, so brand isn’t an issue. I like a lot of the Traeger recipes. Especially, their pot roast recipe. We do it with a few changes. Sweet potatoes, onions, a whole Costco package of portobello mushrooms, half a bottle of sherry. Smokers are a great addition to a camping trip. We like that it fits sideways on our slide tray. Bon apetite.

Thanks for your review!

As I'm now considering getting a grill/smoker myself (thanks to this site!!!), I think the Davy Crockett is the way I'm going after doing a fair amount of research...

Green Mountain Davey Crocket is an excellent portable smoker

I've been using the Green Mountain Davey Crocket pellet smoker for 4 years and found it to be the perfect small portable smoker when outdoors. Since we boondock most of the time, it can also run on 12 volts DC or 120 volts AC. It will run for days on small battery jumper pack or solar panel. With the built in Wifi it can be controlled from your phone (no internet or cell connection needed). I've been able to smoke two racks of ribs in it and up to 12lbs briskets. It has Legs that fold up or can be used on a table top. It's a little heavy when placing or removing from storage compartment, but with optional storage bag it's easier to move around.

Thanks for this info! I told mama about the Davy Crockett, and she didn't say no. She was more interested in how big it was and what we could get on it. This was helpful!!!

One of the things I liked is it fit well in the basement and I can do a whole 15 lb Turkey.

I will second (or 3rd or 4th?) the GMG Davy Crockett. We had a Traeger for a couple of years and then switched to GMG and haven't looked back. The convenience of the WiFi connection and temperature probe are great. I use it for slow/smoking cooking or searing as in steaks and anything in between.
