Advice for Yellowstone?

We keep saying every year we want to take a trip to Yellowstone (live in Iowa). But each time I start to try and make a plan I get overwhelmed and just call it off. I don't have a great understanding at all if I can try to just go day by day there or if I have to have a reservation. I have a generator and just need some spots to dump and fill up every few days and a place to park. Is this possible? Or should I expect to only go if I can get a series of reservations made? Thanks for any help!
