Front AC Problems

Good afternoon. I have a 2018 Montana high country HM375FL. The front air-conditioning unit does not seem to work as well as it should. Currently camping in Oklahoma, the outside temperature is 95°. I have the air conditioner set at 65° and it is currently 80 inside the rig. It is taking the humidity out of the air so that is a plus.

The bedroom air conditioner works great and we’ve always seem to have problems with the front keeping the rig cool in the middle of summer. Does anybody have any suggestions on what I should check?

Away to combat the heat is to close your blinds, it’s 95 and fills like 101. We’re in FortSmith and we keep our we close the blinds when the temp/Sun starts get intense. Now where a 3160 RL so we’re a different layout and some what smaller rig but we stay at 77 inside doing those things. I also keep my awnings out to keep the sun off the side of the rig.

If you have made sure your return air is open going back to the AC unit (some have collapsed and had to have pvc pipe installed to open them back up. Then you should consider taking the vents down in the area you want the most cold air to fall in and removing every other rib so you get more air flow. While you have them down take the the vent's holder down also and cut the tube going into the duct so it is even with the bottom of the duct which will also increase air flow. Use reflective silver insulation on windows you don't need to see out of to cut the heat intrusion, make sure you have covered the furnaces return air vents for the summer and check to see if hot air is coming in your vent over the stove. One of our rigs has to have the vent locked on the outside when not in use due to hot air coming in a lot, the other not so much.

Another thing to check is the evaporator coil of the unit. I had not pulled the shroud off of our front A/C in a couple of years and we started to have water dripping in the bedroom. When I pulled the shroud and the foam blocks, I found the entire front of the evaporator unit covered with a layer of lint that had escaped the cheap foam filter inside. Once I carefully cleaned most of the lint off, the water dripping stopped and we get a lot more air flow now so it cools much better than it has for several years. This is a photo of the remaining lint which I will finish cleaning when I install a SoftStartRV on the A/C.
