Heading to Colorado

After skipping our usual summer-fall travels to Colorado last year, we are on the road again and in Santa Fe for a few days. So far, the I-10 RV traffic from San Antonio to Las Cruces has been light. Most RV parks have the usual one night just like us but only about 8-10 rigs pull in. Lots of available spaces. In Santa Fe, at Santa Fe Skies, full every night with about 15 rigs leaving and more coming in. Big surprise at the Farmer's Market in the Railyard. Only about 15 vendors--mostly veggies and baking. It was almost shocking to see so few vendors and buyers. But we got what we wanted. Another surprise, many local restaurants are closed Monday and Tuesday--Like Tortilla Flats and Tomasitos. Heading to Blue Spruce RV Park that is east of Durango for about 9 weeks. We will see how Durango, CO, is doing! Otherwise--great trip!

Have a great trip. We made yearly trips to South Fork/Wolf Creek Pass area for many years and really miss it.

Blue Spruce is a great place. If you haven’t been there before, you’re in for a treat.

Just got back from 10 days in Durango, been busting there for 35 years. It was extremely busy, Probably our last year as a destination, it’s lost the old small town feel. Ouray is closer to what Durango used to be. Silverton was as busy during the week days as I’ve ever seen it. This year we also pulled our Polaris Ranger Crew out to ride all the trails, traffic on the trails and back country was light, had a great time staying out of town. Businesses and restaurants were short staffed . We stayed at Oasis RV Park which was formerly the KOA. It was outstanding, run much better than when it was a KOA. It was full every night. One thing you might consider is you could not buy a bag of ice anywhere near Durango. All C stores, grocery stores and WalMart had zero ice, something about the ice company not having employees or delivery drivers. Luckily the campground had their own ice machine and was bagging it on site. If you’re coming up through Pagosa, it’s a mad house. We’ve never seen it so packed, they’re advertising their 31 dispensaries heavily, I believe it’s become a destination to shop for herbs, multiple accidents in the city limits both comin and going out. We are seeing the same thing in our farmers market. Few vendors on Saturday and none the rest of the week. The little country restaurant we just ate at is closed Monday and closes at one o’clock the rest of the week, no help.

This will be our 7th season at Blue Spruce. A new owner will make things interesting but it will probably be the same great place! I have been going to the Lake Vallecito area since I was 8! (74 now!)Missed a few years in college but it seems to look about the same. Glad to hear good news about Durango business and the mountain towns--Silverton, Ouray, etc.

Tim and Susan, enjoy our state. Everything west of the continental divide is tinder dry. Keep your head on a swivel for fires. They can happen quickly and spread rapidly. The east side has been a huge turnaround from last year. In Larimer county, we have one of the highest soil moisture contents in the state. Our subdivision last year was evacuated twice. That part of the state has a lot to see and do. Enjoy your trip.

Saw that first hand a number of years ago staying between town of South Fork and Wolf Creek Pass. Day 1 we drove over the pass toward Pagosa Springs and saw a little smoke up north just west of the pass. Day 2 a very large cloud of smoke was rising over the pass. Day 3 looked like a huge volcanic eruption had occurred with mushrooming smoke clouds spreading over the entire area. Late in the day everyone, including the nearby town of South Fork and areas north toward Creede were ordered to evacuate. Towns were saved but huge areas of forest will take many years to fully recover.
