I hate you all. Moved for first time since this discussion. And I did a pull test as I went to pullout. Y’all made me paranoid.
Legs were up so it still would have fell on bed. But I knew it was good.
We’ll call it a honary pull test.

Think of it like car insurance. How much risk are you willing to assume?

Only reason I do it is to check the brakes, if the lever is in mine can't come unhooked.

We tug test each and every time we move that Montana. I leave at least one of the chalks in place raise the back level up completely and raise the front legs about an inch or so off the ground AFTER we get the unit hooked to the hitch. We do a hookup together with the better half in the drivers seat backing the truck and I stand beside the truck and watch the hitch and kingpin, adjusting the height as she backs it up. Once hooked, is when I raise the front legs about an inch off the ground. She puts it in gear and slowly brings the truck forward. The chalk stops it from going and puts pressure on the kingpin. If it is high hitched it will normally come off the hitch and drop. I do check the jaws of the hitch to make sure they are wrapped around the pin. If the pin stays in place I pull the chalk and off we go. Years back I purchased a "Bed Saver" from Blue Ox and have it attached to the hitch. IF the unit should be "high hitched" and or the jaws of the hitch are not securely closed around the pin the unit will slide back and normally drop on the bed railings of the truck. Not with a "Bed Saver"! It has a cup on extended arms about 6" behind the hitch and the pin drops into that cup and catches the unit BEFORE it reaches the bed railings. Unfortunately, Blue Ox discontinued manufacturing the "Bed Saver" and I have no idea why. It is the best insurance policy I could ever have to save the expense of a new truck bed and repairs to the front cap of the Monte if that unit should come off the hitch in the truck.

I don't know about other hitches, but I have Pullrite slider. When hitched up, I pull the handle (while down normally) and it klunks against some stop thing. To unhitch I have to lift the handle and then pull. I think if it klunks the jaws are wrapped around the pin.
