New storage bay locks and/or struts?

I'm thinking about upgrading the storage bay locks and adding the strut to my 2007 3400RL to get away from the cheesy locks that everyone has a key to. Anyone done this? Recommendations on brands of locks and struts? Any tips on the install? TIA.

I did it on my last RV. Easy job, just take careful measurements. Do a web search for "cam locks".

I thought about the locks, but the bottom line is anybody who wants to get in can get in easily regardless of what lock is there.

While true that most RVers have a CH751 key that fits your lock, they really aren't the ones you need to be concerned about. Key or not, those doors pop open with just a screw driver. I tend to leave the doors unlocked when camping to avoid some thief, bent on getting in, doing more damage with their screw driver. But if it makes you more comfortable to change the locks, there has been lots of discussion here in the past (before Montana quit using the CH751 keyed locks). A quick Search will uncover a treasure chest of postings. One member had a brand new set of tubular replacement locks which he was selling last year. Perhaps he still has them.

Here is one, of many, posts I found which is pertinent. Baggage Locks

As for adding struts, do a Search on those puppies. They were a problem initially due to the screws pulling out of the flimsy wood. The addition of a larger metal base plate, cemented to the door and larger screws seems to be the solution which even Montana uses today.

If someone used a CH751 key to get into your storage compartment would the insurance cover your loss? Technically they didn't break in...they used a key (one just like your's) to steal your stuff with no forced entry.

Much easier to cover that loss than to play deductible games. Besides, ever read how long it took to get replacement doors from Keystone. Mine are never locked ~~ just don't let me catch a thief as I promise they would wish they had another occupation as their drug addiction will be helped by the pain killers doctors prescribe for a long time.

True, but why not make it more difficult for the bad guys? Maybe they would move on to a RV with CH751 OEM locks

Then how would you prove a break in?

A knife or screwdriver ~~ they will most likely not move on, just cause a lot of damage and get in anyway.

How many trailer owners have had their trailer storage compartments broken into? Personally I haven't and don't know of anyone who has.

I used this guys mod on putting struts on the front bay door a couple of years ago.
I used the galvanized pre-punched Tie Plates, glued and attached with 1/2 inch hex screws and the 30 lb struts as he suggested. However I used 1/2 Stainless steel screws to attach the struts. Also I used his measurements on the door for attaching the plate and strut. Still working great.

Hello.. I'm in the process of replacing my locks. Ch751.com has a easy measuring and ordering form.
If you search YouTube you can find a few people that have replaced locks from the company with success.

I did have my basement broken into while in storage. Although hard to call it "broken". They used some kind of pry instrument such as a screwdriver. There was a tiny black mark on the door frame on each side of the trailer. Zero damage. And the locking tabs were bent back at about a 45 degree angle. I just pressed them back in position with my thumb. If you want any kind of better security you will need some type of stronger locking mechanism.

These same guys knocked out door windows on another 5er and a motor home to get inside them. Not likely a thief is even going to know what a 751 key is.

Anybody can get past a 751 lock, or any similar lock, with either a key or a screwdriver...take about as long with either one.

Yes, it called theft and you should be covered. If not your insurance company is no good.

A screwdriver would get anyone in if they wanted and cause damage. I never lock mine!
