Tire Upgrade

I have a question on upgrading the Marathon tires. I'm fed up with these tires - only a year old, and only about 2000 miles on them and I've had to replace one due to a split in the sidewall and a full blowout a week ago on a trip (move) from AZ to CO.

This site and many tire dealers have recommended the G614/85R16's which I'm happy to pay more for just for peace of mind knowing I weigh over 14K (Montana 3400).

This is a bigger tire - any problems space wise replacing with these? And what is the recommendation for the wheel? Any specific brands would be helpful. The tire dealership is trying to match the wheel and tire and having problems finding the right wheel.

Haven't heard of anyone having clearance problems with the G614. If your Montana is only 1 year old then your wheels should fine. A close look on the back of the wheel will tell you what the wheel is rated for

The G614s are on our 2010 3150 and there is not a clearance problem. On the back side of one of the spokes on your wheel you will see the wheel rating. It might look something like this: Rating

As for wheels, the stock Tredit (Tredittire.com)wheels on the Montana are cast Chinese. Alcoa makes the best in my opinion, as they are forged Al and are available as a Classic in 7x16.
I had to trim the inside lip of the plastic fender skirt on the passenger side of my 3150 for the G614s. The skirt rubbed the tire on bumpy roads. Used a Dremel and removed about 3/4". The driver side with the skirt on the slideout was OK.
If you stay with the TO4 Tredit wheels make sure your dealer gets the special steel valve stems with the double nut on the underside, as a standard steel valve will not fit down in the smaller hole in the wheel. The correct stems are Enkei 1 1/4" product code 24123 fits .453" hole or the shorter 24117 from Myertiresupply.com. Be sure to get them balanced and then monitor the pressures regularly , as I had two problems; one a leaky pin hole in a wheel; and two, a leaky seal around the bottom of the valve stem. The tires are great!

On the back side of your wheels in the center of one spoke you should see engraved 3750 lbs 110 psi, if your wheels are aluminum. Ours is 2010, we have G614's, fit well, and whls are plainly marked. Good luck. Larry

I am having G614's put on this Wednesday prior to a trip to Canada.I've got the 110psi rated wheels which came on the trailer, but first I've heard about having to modify the wheel trim. Guess I'll have to wait and see.

Were the original wheels the same ones that supported the OEM ST235/80R16 Marathons that came with the Montana?

The ba k of my wheels do say 110 rating. But they are only rated to 3200#s. With my rig being around 14K to 14.5K, this I believe would be pushing the max. Am I off on this?

When you say 14.5K are you talking total GRVW (total gross vehicle weight). If yes to GRVW then that is the weight on both axles and the pin weight. So you need to calculate what just your axle weights are and then make the call if 3200# is not enough.

I'm still learning how to determine weights. So if my pin weight is around 2500#s, do I subtract that from the GRVW and then divide by four to see if the wheel spec is good? If so, then 14.5K less 2500 would be 12K or 3000 per wheel. Am I going the right direction?

When you talk about the Tredits, are these that come with the Montana - the ones I have?

The original equip wheels on the Montana are from Tredit( Tredittire.com). My 2011 3150RL came with the "T04" model wheel which is stamped on the rear of a spoke with the "110psi" rating needed for the G614s. Older Montanas had the "T06" wheels which have/have not been rated for 110psi. If you go to the Tredit website and click on "Aluminum" wheels, 8 lug, you should be able to see which ones you have.

Or, if you decide to go for new wheels as well as the tires, look into 17.5" rims and tires which have well over 4000lb capacity.
I have heard of MOC members doing this, but am not sure what model Goodyear tire it is for the 17.5?
