DUAL 6 VOLT BATTERY UPGRADE
Okay...going on the premise that there are no stupid questions, I will ask away. When I connect the two 6 volt batteries, does it matter if I connect the cables from the coach to the terminals of the batteries before I connect the batteries in series or can I connect the batteries in series and then connect the cables from the coach to the batteries, or does it even matter Any input as always is appreciated.
Jack

When I did my change to 2 sixes from 2 twelves I had both of my 6's connected to make 12 volts just to make sure it was 12 VDC then I connected the trailer to it, but I dont see why your way wont work other than a possable spark when you conect the 2 sixes together from the items that are always on in the trailer.

That's what I was thinking of doing and for that same reason. I know how to hook them in series, but this website: Batteries has you connecting the batteries to the rig before connecting them in series. OBTW, it is the only website I have found that even gives a sequence for connecting everything. I think it would be more important to make sure you are getting 12 volts before connecting the batteries to the rig.

I'm with you Jack (and Trailer Trash II). I would want 12V first, then connect to the frame. The other way may work, but I envision a potential spark condition when making the last contact (to create 12V and connect everything into one circuit).

It's amazing how fast the smoke escapes if you happen to hook those things up in just the wrong way. I'd also, based on hearsay, of course, not experience, suggest hooking the batteries together first and double checking for 12V before connecting to the rig.

My initial reaction is NO it does not matter. You do not complete the circuit until the two batteries are connect in series.
My second comment is that I would connect so it is easiest to prevent electricity from flowing until the last connect is made.
My final comment is YES it does make a difference for safety. If you connect the trailer to each battery first and then connect the two batteries there is a BIG chance the jumper cable could touch the trailer during this process. This would either short the positive of on six volt battery to the trailer or apply six volts to the trailer if it was the ground side of the battery to the trailer. (NOTE-Thanks to Carl N Susan for their comment and making this possibility apparent.)
So I recommend connecting the batteries first. Putting the Positive lead from the trailer on the batteries first and finally putting the ground or negative from the trailer on the batteries completing the circuit.
GREAT QUESTION.

Thanks for all the inputs.....as usual the MOC comes through. I will hook the batteries in series first to verify 12 volts and then complete the connections as John has recommended. I won't be doing this for a week or so but will report back when it is completed. Thanks again.

I think I would also kill the 12volt main breaker in the panel before hookong to the trailer. Once you are hooked up and 12 volts verified then flip the main back on. I am not sure this is necessary but I prefer to make connections when there is no or very little load on them.

I would be careful which ever way you use to make sure there is NO spark near the batteries. We had some old work utility trailer batteries blow, and I mean a big BOOM. Fortunately no one was close when it happened but a welding spark lit the thing off. So I would caution to see you make no spark over the batteries. Granted I have many times jumped the batteries and made spark but if all things are in the "improper" order they go boom.

When hooking up a golf cart you hook the batterys together first then hook the pos up and hook the neg last. thats the way we do it on 48 volts. Neg last protects the system. JMHO
