Storing the hitch on the kingpin?

We watched the video down in "The Trading Post A MOC Marketplace" category that Backwoods filmed of his 342PHT Montana he has up for sale and noticed that he stores his hitch on the kingpin. (please go watch his video #1 if I didn't explain it correctly).

OTHER than the issue of theft, is there any reason why this would not be a good thing to do? We are thinking that sure would be easier than lifting the hitch out of the truck when we need the bed of the truck for other uses.

Thanks for any input.

As long as you are not using a tripod, there should be no problem with it. I believe there was an old thread on this issue, can't remember who or when. Maybe someone can remember.

Actually the weight is not a problem. the other advantage would be that it will be a lot harder for it to be stolen. With a lock on the hitch, the thief would have to cut the lock and let the hitch fall and even if just to the back of a truck, it will draw a lot of attention.
There is a fellow here in Troy that stores his hitch that way all winter, just wraps a trash bag around it for protection against the weather.
So far this year, I've been lucky enough to not need the use of my bed, the hitch has not been removed.

Could become another "head knocker" or something to run into when walking under the front end.

I have seen a lot of folks do that in our travels over the last two years. Its Ok I guess we don't do it but if I ever need the bed of the truck clear I know what to do.

I wonder what Keystone would say about hanging your receiver on the king pin. Would there be any warranty issues?

Consider how many times it hangs on the TV bouncing down the road, and the hanging is 2000+ pounds vice 200+ pounds

I am fulltiming, But, I'm not sure I would want to hang that extra weight on the hitch if my trailer is parked for awhile.

There would not be any issues and surely not an extra weight issue. The pin box carries a lot more weight and takes a lot of punishment when dragging the big old 5er down the road. Considerably more weight than having the hitch just hanging there.

I sure wouldn't want to pull the trailer if the kingpin couldn't take the weight of the hitch hanging on it. Actually, I like it hanging there; no way I can walk into the pin now, as the hitch hangs down too low.

Any way that we can lessen the load on our backs and keep the sciatic nerve from flaring up is definitely worth a consideration from us. We never thought of the idea until we saw "Backwoods" doing it on his video.

Thanks for all the responses, we'll probably try this next time we have to get the hitch out of the truck bed. If anyone else has any comments on this idea, please keep 'em coming.

Has anyone tried doing this with a super glide hitch?

I had to use the truck bed the other day and removed the hitch. After reading this forum about this subject a while back I decided this was the way to go. I hooked up the fifth wheel, pulled the pins, raised the hitch and away I went; hitch on the fiver.

When I went to hook back up I had to re-adjust a few times but then I sat it back in the very slots it came from. One requirement that made it much easier was that as I was setting it on the bed, I placed the truck in neutral. [I was on a flat area where the truck couldn't roll on its own or become a problem.] I then just set the hitch on the truck bed placing it right where it needed to be and put the pins in place. I un-hooked and the job was finished. Overall it was much easier than I anticipated. I once took it off by man handling it and that was no fun at all; that was also before I added the Blue Ox bed saver to the weight of it. This was really an effortless procedure and how I will deal with using the truck bed in the future. I do not believe that it should cause a problem in any way with the hitch.
