slideouts

OK all you Montana problem-solvers, I've got a question for you. [size=2]Has anyone else experienced this?

After a long day on the road, while setting up, we were putting out the slide-outs and the kitchen slide-out was a problem. Seemed like only one end of it was sliding and the other end wasn't, causing the slide-out to torque or pivot. After two more unsuccessful attempts, we used the automatic again, helping it along on the sluggish end by pushing it out, from the inside. In the morning, we had to push the sluggish end from the outside while using the automatic. That brought it fully in.

Does anyone have an idea what's wrong and how to fix it?

See reply for your question yesterday. Sounds like a sheared bolt on the square tube to the slide.

Moc-6552,
There are two bolts in the square shaft under the slide. On the end of the shaft are two gears that turn to keep the slide extracting or retracting in sink.Like Larry said, one of these has broken.Find which one take a little pressure off the shaft, line up the holes with a punch or screwdriver and put a new bolt in.

Ditto to the previous post for repair. But you also need to measure the distance on the tubes from the frame before you install the bolt to get them the same are the slide will not be even when closed or out poisition. Just turn the opposite end with a wrench to get them the same distance.

The bolts you want to buy are 1/4-20 x 2" hex head Grade 8 bolts (per Lippert). They're available in many hardware stores. The grade 8 is apparently important. These are shear bolts and are intended to break when under excess stress. Otherwise you damage the slide mechanism.

Get several flat washers to fill in where the bolt shoulder sticks out of the shaft. It is intentional that no threads are inside the shaft as the threads are a weak point. Use the washers so the nut will snug tight.

We also broke one. The info above is from a Lippert rep. Lippert built the slide mechanism.
