Similar 30AMP cord questions...?

Didn't want to hijack Snakepitjones thread, so I'll run a parallel question. I also would like to semi-retire my 50 AMP cord for only necessary occasions, but, was a little concerned that with additional "connections", for adapters, I might run into a problem. Was wondering if those of you share my concerns or are they unfounded...?
Since we got hit with a power surge which fried the converter and some other stuff, I purchased a "Surge Guard" protector, unfortunately after the fact.
Here's the questions;
Can there be too many connections ? will the added connections cause any issues ? how many connections are too many ?

In my scenario I would have a 50/30 adapter at the Monty, connected to a 30 AMP cord, connected to a 30/50 adapter, connected to the 50 Surge Guard, connected to a 50/30 connector plugging into the Park Pedestal's 30 AMP power. That's SIX (6) connections. ( I layed all the pieces out on the floor at Camping World and it looks like a lot of connections to me)

Just wondering what other folks who use autoformers and surge guards are handling this...

thanks, jerry

Hi Jerry and Karen,

I have found that connectors tend to get warm, or even overheat when run close to full load. I would eliminate at least one by going with a 30 amp cord that has a 50amp fitting to connect directly to the trailer, (you can get one at Camping World). I'm not an electrician, but I would think that you could get the Surgeguard rewireed with 30 amp cable in a way that would eliminate all the added connectors. In short, YES, I think you can have too many connectors and I would try to find a way to eliminate as many as possible.

The heat you experience at the connections is caused mostly by loose and dirty connections. Most of the male connectors flat pins can be spread apart with a small screw driver or knife. The pins should be kept clean by using a knife or emery cloth to keep them shiny. I agree, 6 connectors is too many. The most I've ever used is 4.

Jerry, I think I lucked out on this deal. I had the 30Amp autoformer on my Motorhome I traded in and thought it best if I take it off and keep it. I believe the 30amp autoformer will work just fine on the Monty and....I agree 6 connections is too much (work that is). I would have to have a schematic drawing every time I went to hook up to remember what when where.
