Frosty refrigerator

The refrigerator gets quite a bit of frost build-up on the fins inside the box. We have been in continuous use for about 2 months. Is this normal?

What do you have it set at? Is it on AC or Propane?

Yes, it is normal. About every 6 months, we take everything out of the freezer and refrigerator and put in a cooler with ice. Then, we use hot water, in pots and place in both compartments. We let everything defrost and then we clean from top to bottom with 409.

After letting the fridge come back to temp (takes about 16 hours), we put everything back in the fridge. I will say that we try to reduce the amount of foodstuffs we put in the cooler when we do this defrost thing.

We have found that by turning the temp setting UP and watching the actual temp (not rise) this cuts down ice buildup quite a bit.

To defrost the refer I take things off the top shelf and use a hair dryer on LOW it takes 10-15 minutes to clear.

For the freezer I put everything in the sink with ice trays and a towel on top. I use the hair dryer again and finish in 10-15 minutes also. I never turn the unit off.

This has worked for three years now.

Another thing you can do, which someone else posted here a while ago, is turn the frig off at night. In the morning most of the frost/ice is gone and the temp in the frig is still cool enough. JUst turn the frig back on. When you are travelling you can turn the frig off and that usually takes care of any build up. If you haven't been into the frig during your trip, the temp stays in the safe zone.
