Add a second A/C??

Anybody install a second A/C unit in their rig??

We were out last week, and the single A/C in the main area was totally inadequate for the job. It even froze up once.

We have a vent location in the bedroom that I believe is for a second A/C---there is an electrical cover plate next to it that says something about 120v for A/C.

If a second unit is installed, did you hook it up to the duct system??

Any info appreciated.

Our 2007 is the same as yours, a cover plate beside the vent location with wiring for power. We had a 13.5k A/C installed there years ago. Ours is not tied into the duct. Which is fine as we generally only use it after a hot day of towing to cool the trailer down before nighttime. The rear 15k will pretty much keep the trailer cool after running both has adequately cooled it. But good to have that second one just in case.

Usually when you add an additional A/C unit, it's non-ducted. However, you'd have to do some exploring in the attic space around that vent area to see how the factory intended on adding the second AC in that location. There may be knock-outs in the ducting. There may not be.

You also have to see how the 120V is configured to power it at the other end of the pre-wired circuit.

It is important to look where the fan is and see what's up there. On the newer units, even for the 3rd AC option there is a thermostat wire up in there and it goes to behind the fan control so you just take the fan control off the wall and add the thermostat. Once you know what you have and what duct options you have then you can order the proper AC unit and inside box.

Thanks everybody

Thanks for the replies so far.

The opening does not have a fan, so not concerned with that factor.

I will most likely go with an inside cover with the fan and thermostat controls built in, making this unit a stand alone. Something like this;

I also want to duct it if possible.
