Broken slide gear teeth

We just bought a new Montana 3440RL Legacy. As we were doing our orientation we heard loud popping noises from one of the hydraulic slides. They said that wasn't unusual. After we pushed the issue they found that two teeth had broken off the 18 tooth stationary gear. We went to lunch and they replaced it. We are now home after our first short trip and we now have two teeth broken off the opposite side gear on the same slide. Is this a common problem.....this is very troubling on a 2017 NEW unit. Any info would be helpful. Thank you.

We have had good luck with our slides, lots of other problems but not with the slides. Generally pretty reliable.

Broken gear teeth are a very unusual problem. You would expect the shear bolt to snap before a tooth broke. I assume the dealer didn't move the broken gear to the other end for a quick fix. Was the gear cracked by whatever event cause the other breakage? Very suspicious. The gear pack is away from most everything and it is hard to explain how it could be damaged.

I heard about this at the Fall Rally. Someone else had this problem but I don't remember who it was. When they had it fixed they said the slide was binding and caused the teeth to sheer. You may have this same problem. Since it is under warranty, call Keystone Customer Service and tell them about your problem and have them start a file on your unit. Then take it back to your dealer and tell them about it if you have not done this already. By contacting Keystone Customer Service your one step closer for the dealer to take care of this easier. Keep us informed on how thing go with the problem.

I don't know what the dealer was referring to but popping noises are NOT normal. The sound of teeth being snapped off is NOT good. The dealer was trying to not just get you off their lot and out of their hair, they just wanted not to have to fix this problem.

In the dealer's defense, there will be some noise from the gearing as the slides go in or out, but I'm gueesing the nose you heard was way louder than this normal noise, and like I mention, I just think the dealer was trying to pull a fast one.

Just so you know, my Montana is over 10 years old and three slides do not show any teeth missing on the wheel or the rails even after this long. I have a fourth slide, but it is the small bedroom slide and I cannot see the gears without taking covers apart and since there are no unusual noises I am pretty sure they are okay.

You need to follow Rondo's suggestion and I hope your rig IS still under warranty.

Art ... you won't find any gears or balance shaft under your bedroom slide as it just slides on top of the carpet, but I agree with the rest of your reply.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will definitely call customer service. I am set to take it back to CE in Anderson where I bought it, but the customer service call is a great Idea.

Well it is now December 24, 2016 and we haven't seen our new 2017 Montana since we dropped it off at CW in Anderson on November 12. I can't figure out if the dealer or Keystone is the biggest problem. The service guy said they ordered the gear replacement. When it arrived they installed it and low and behold it had problems too. Wow, after the first two gears broke, they thought this must be a bad batch of gears....When I dropped it off I asked them to check the whole system because it just didn't make sense about the bad gears. Well guess what, now they told me it was a slide rail that was missing teeth because it was installed crooked. So now after six weeks we had to cancel our annual Christmas trip to see our family in So Cal because they are waiting for parts. Oh, they said I could pay 200.00 for shipping and they might get there in time. I am really sorry we bought a Montana and really disappointed in Our total lack of customer service at Camping World in Anderson CA. When we left the unit with CW on November 12I told them we needed it back so we could take our trip on December 22. I received two phone calls during the whole time. My advice is to steer clear of this dealer and I am. It sure about the Keystone warranty system.

By the way, I did contact Keystone Customer service after it was suggested by Rhondo. I told them the initial problem and history at delivery. They did open a file. Didn't have any other comments, but did say it shouldn't take as long as the dealer suggested to get warranty work done. We have owned this Montana for 9 weeks and it has been in the shop for 6 of those weeks. Pretty discouraging.

First, I keep a list of good and bad dealers reported here and while there are some good Camping Worlds they have the record for number of bad dealers under one ownership. I can tell you we had an issue with one of our slides (hole not cut correctly) and Keystone fixed it at their customer service center. Two other issues were fixed under warranty at different dealerships in one day.

I'll support Dick's summing up of CW. Sorry you've not seen your fiver in over a month and a half, but from experience of close relatives ... a great percentage of Camping World's have great prices when you buy, but incredibly terrible, deplorable, and inept service departments. If you continue to take your fiver there for issues down the road ... you'll only get more and more disgusted. Letting Keystone know about your displeasure with CW will fall on deaf ears as Keystone does not micro-manage any dealer that sells their product.

Wow, Keystone customer service really made an impact....they told me that they contacted Anderson C.W....they informed me that management was now involved and should get resolution.......The result was that CW checked and they never ordered the parts for my repair!!! They told me that it was a personnel problem and they fired the person who orders their parts. Everything fixed right...wrong!! That phone call was on January 4th it is now January 24th and still not fixed and not a even a phone call.

Sadly, this happens more often than you might think. I call it "holding the RV hostage"
I would suggest that you initiate the call when you want/need an update. You may also want to simply show up and get face to face with the CW service manager and physically check on your Montana. Just a suggestion.
Good luck to you on getting this resolved to your satisfaction.

Hello All I seem to hear is lots of sad stories about poor workmanship by the dealers and even worse support from Keystone. Our 2016 3790RD Legacy is horrifying hitch to rear bumper.. Bought June of 2015 and still some major issues that are aggravating. Refrigerator ( Norcold) , slide outs , Air conditioning and a handful of other things that we have fixed ourselves.Maybe if a few hundred of us trekked to Head Office we may get some action..
