Did you mean under $40 instead of 400???

We use Rest areas, Walmart, Cracker Barrel, Flying J etc... for short over night stays when possible. So many campgrounds have priced themselves so high we simply stopped using them. The game changed post covid.

I suggest joining your local Elks Lodge. About 90% of Elk Lodges have full, if not, partial hookups. Fees run between $25 - $50 per day.

I think the answer depends on your definition of camping and your timeline to get from ID to LA.
If your goal is to just get there, Walmart and Pilot/Flying J are your friends.
If you are not in a hurry and stopping at campgrounds a couple nights at each stop, I find it difficult to stay under $400 total.
Typical “cheap” campgrounds nowadays, range about $40 - $60 a night for just a place to park and have hookups and nothing else.

My wife and I recently pulled our fifth wheel from South Souix City, Nebraska to St. Francisville, Louisiana. We did the trip in 2 days. Did one overnight at a private campground. Cost for the campground was about $40 for the night.

Look at a map, determine the total distance, divide that distance by the number of days you plan to travel. Map out those desired stopping locations and then do some Google searches for campgrounds in those areas. Find your desirable ones and give them a call to confirm prices and make reservations.

But, if you want to go zero dollars, then Wall Mart and Cracker Barrel overnights are the way to go.

Search Harvest Host, Boondockers Welcome, Hip Camp.
They show you general area of the host not exact location but it will give you an idea where along your route they might be convenient.
For a Campground in the area you are going, there is a Facebook Group called
Small RV Parks and Private Lots Available.
You might find something cheaper than a local Campground.
