What's the best GPS?
We're in the market for a new GPS. Stella (our GPS) is getting old and lately seems a bit confused. We think she is ready for her retirement. If you could write a letter to Santa and get the best GPS for use in a truck/5th wheel, what would be your choice? We know this has been a subject on the Forum before, but technology keeps changing and new models are constantly available.

Hi Dick thats a hard choise they all seem to work the same and all seem to have the same problem updating ther maps to current time,
I have had 2 Garmins and have been happy with the newer Nuvi types along with there laptop version.
I also have MS Streets and trips with the transponder that makes your computer laptop a GPS. you will hear all kinds of sugestions from many users and different types.
right now Im content with those two

The best one out there is the one that is installed in the dash of the new Ford Super Dutys.

The absolute best GPS is the one that you have, you understand and you like. It doesn't matter what who says to the contrary.

We just got a new Garmin Nuvi 1690. routes are programmable from your computer, names of streets at turns are announced, proper lane at junctions is shown, bluetooth for phone, breadcrumb trail so you can find your way back, connection to internet via AT&T with 2 year subscription which allows searches for POI's, weather, traffic alerts, gas prices and more. So far we are impressed with it, it's a nice step up from our Nuvi 650. We found it new on Ebay for $309

One suggestion, if you have or are planning to get a handheld GPS, I would stick with the same brand for both the handheld and truck GPS. We did that with our DeLorme and have not been disappointed in either unit. Lots of choices--have fun waiting for Santa !

I bought a Garmin 465T truckers GPS and found it does route you differently between truck and car mode. (you enter your rigs specs in the truck mode)
Like all other brands of GPS, IMHO it's just inaccurate enough at times not to be 100% reliable, although I will say we've never had serious problem in truckers mode, i.e. too low a bridge or other trucking hazards.

Love our Garmins. But any current GPS is better than no GPS.

We have two questions re your 1690T:
Can you change mode to truck?
Can you turn off traffic assist? We've heard it can be annoying.
Thanks to all for recommendations and opinions.

I did a upgrade to a Garmin 1450. It has a 5" screen and it can receive routes and waypoints from the Garmin MapSource program (I got the program free with the purchase of my first gps and have recieved free updates) you can run on a laptop to plan trips. The 1450 can also be used by itself to plan routes. I think you can store 10 routes on the unit. It does not have the traffic feature so it cost less then the 1650. I have noticed since I purchased mine the price has come down.

The one that works best for me is that lady who sits beside me and instructs me where I should HAVE turned. But oh I am so sorry I missed the exit to the mall. I thought you said the NEXT exit :%)

Thanks to all for the info. The input helped a lot. We wound up buying the Garmin Nuvi 1490T at Costco. When we asked how long we had to return it, they said a year!!! So, I guess we can't go wrong. It has lifetime traffic assistance, lane assist with junction view, routes, etc. This will be our new "Stella," but we'll keep her "mother" in the truck as a backup just in case she misbehaves.

Footloose -
We have the 1690. You can switch between the traffic map and regular. You can also turn off the ads that fund the traffic signal which turns off traffic. The latest Garmin upgrade and the master reset have cured issues we had. I suggest you list the features YOU want and find one that fits YOUR needs. For us, Bluetooth, traffic and the ability to find up-to-date info were critical. Nulink with Google has the ability to find diesel prices, movies and weather. If those are features you don't or won't use there is no sense paying for them.

Thanks Ron and Terrie, we bought the 1490T because it is a step down from the 1690T you have. After hearing what features you have, we decided those were pretty much the features we wanted. We don't want the AT&T subscription. Otherwise, it seems fairly similar. We appreciate your response very much.

The DW bought me a Garmin 1490T today as a birthday present. We like the 5 inch screen since our eyes aren't that young anymore. It will replace the StreetPilot 2720 which I'll use in my old Honda. And, I always keep an up to date atlas and maps from AAA as a back up to the GPS as they can make mistakes.

Tim, Happy Birthday. We used our new 1490T today and liked it. We keep Stella (our GPS) in the cup holder that pulls out from the dash. Her base is shorter than our previous one and didn't want fit easily. So we took an empty clean soup can, stuffed foam into it, then wrapped some more foam around Stella's base and pushed her into the can. It works great. We can take her out of the truck easily. Here's a picture. She's sitting on our desk.
