bad day in arkansas

I am having a hard time remaining calm! If I ever see arkansas in this life, it will be too soon. After leaving Tom Saywer, getting diesel at flying j (rvs longer than 32 ft have to use center pump under awning with cars), getting back onto I40 and driving but a few miles...it happened. Heavy traffic, two lanes, I run into a "rolling highway dept lane restriction". They said there was a prior warning that I didn't see...but cresting a hill with a car in the left lane beside me, I see a highway truck on the shoulder with a big sign attached to the side of it. Trouble is the sign takes up half the right lane, is only a hundred feet or so in front of me and I have nowhere to go. Crowding the center of the road, I hit the sign with the front molding on the front cap, scratch down the side to the front awning arm which gets ripped in two at the joint where it meets the shock, more scratch to door where hinge on door gets dinged and slight bend, on to where sign puts hole in rearmost side of door window, scratch on across both window frames and windows, then on to rear cap molding. Cost...who knows...state police say my fault and I will have to pay state for new sign (has some slight scrapes on edge). Right now someone could steal the fifth wheel while I am away from it and I would be delighted. I mean, who needs this .... john

Not good... I feel for you. Wish you luck on the repairs... I felt the same way when I had to fork out $8,500 when I got a batch of bad fuel and had to replace the pollution control parts on my Dodge...

Sorry for your loss. That does sound like it was unavoidable and that is a shame. Good luck with the repair. In a couple of months this will just be a bad dream. I think I will stay away from Arkansas.

Sorry to hear of your bad break. Reading the description had me put myself in your place. I would certainly have the same feelings at this point, but it will pass. You will take the necessary steps to move on. But, yeah I'd be hating everything right now, too.

What a bummer. But you will have to admit the State Police were probably correct, unless every rig topping that hill was banging into that sign truck it probably was your fault. That is what insurance is for, at least you didn't get a traffic ticket on top of everything else.

It sucks, but that's why you have insurance. As previously said, no one was hurt, and that's the important part.

It does suck but you got to shake it off, pay the bill and move on. No one was hurt and that is what counts.

Not sure if you had a chance to go back and confirm the alleged signage. I have handled a number of claims over the years when the contractor responsible for traffic signage had dropped the ball and were held responsible. Law enforcement would not necessarily be aware that the signage didn't get put, or blew over, or whatever.

If you missed it, that happens, and it is good that you have insurance. Only hope that you get a free accident without being surcharged.

It will pass. Travel safe!!

Sorry to hear about your misfortune! I know very well how frustrating that kind of thing can be, but you know it could have happened in any state, and it's certainly not the Montys fault either
Sounds like possibly poor judgement by the sign truck driver...just my .02
You did the right thing by not swerving or causing an accident...good job! Any sign prior to that truck should have been prominent enough that nobody could miss it! Obviously it was not (assuming you were paying attention ).
Personally, I would make a case for that and, at the very least, refuse to pay for their "damaged" sign!

Thanks all for the words. Means a lot coming from this community. The sign that I missed was a truck with a flashing arrow pointing left. Anyone that parks a vehicle on the backside of a hill just below the crest and not visable from a point before the hill is not the brightest person in the world. I am now viewing this affair as "taking one for the team" ...so you guys should be safe from this sort of thing. Just need to find out the cost of three windows, some awning parts, try some buffing on the fiberglass wall and I am good to go. John

How do you miss a truck with one of those big flashing arrows? While I can see why this is your fault, I do sympathize with you about the costs it will take to get your trailer back in shape.

Actually he did see it perhaps to late because of its position and had nowhere to go. I understand that experience.

The "missed" one was supposedly a flashing arrow, the "hit" one was an all metal big orange sign and I couldn't even tell you what was written on it as my brain was trying to take in the big picture and find a way out of the situation. Haven't a clue how I did not see the small flashing sign, except to say that I must have been zoned in on all the traffic as I am the slowest vehicle on the highway. The good thing was that I had gorilla tape onboard and that allowed me to gather in the awning support arn and tape it closed to the side of monte. John

Was there a sign that said use left lane or right lane closed ahead? Not sufficient warning for heavy traffic. Sign truck should have been out of the right lane unless something stating right lane closed ahead.Being out of state you are automatically wrong according to the police. When you see these signs in the future, slow down to prepare for the unexpected.

After all that trauma, the best thing to do is, look back at the relaxing time you had at Tom Sawyer RV Park watching the barges going up and down on the Mississippi, meeting new friends. Did you notice high water flood marks on the buildings there that were 15' above where you parked at the Tom Sawyer rv park? Those marks are when the river crested a while back.
