Had to use my 4 wheel drive twice last week on vacation to Florida. We were at St Andrews by the pier and I did a turn around (without trailer) and my back wheels went off the pavement into the sand and it was spin city till I remembered to kick in the front wheels. Otherwise a wrecker would have been pulling me out. RVFireFighter had already left for Ala so he would have been of no help. Then on way back spent the night at this little ole camp ground and had to back 5ver up on a small little hill (pad) and the back wheels kept spinning so I kicked the front wheels in and back right up on the pad.
Just my opinion and not intended to offend anyone.

My vote is for the 4WD for all of the reasons stated.

There aren't many things that I disagree with Bert when it comes to tucks. BUT," With a 4wd you have the added cost ($3500 - $4000 for GM)". That my be the list price for 4wd drive however, I don't think the real world cost is anywhere near that high.

When I bought my truck I was trying to find a 4X2 dually and I couldn't find even 1 within 150 miles of the SF Bay area doing an Internet search. The only one I actually found on the Internet was very close to the price I paid for 4X4 but, wasn't exactly like the truck I wanted. So, at least out here the availability of 4X2 duallies is very limited.

I have no intention of off roading or driving in snow with my truck but,you can't control the weather or the roads. So, it is good to know the 4X4 is there if I find myself pulling through a rain soak under construction section of road.

Bert, you already have 4wd with that dually! It's a 6X4! That would make Grant's a 6X6.

John's idea is a pretty nice option. A cold beer and tow hooks.

Used to watch Uncle Sam's 2 1/2 ton trucks (duece and a half) get stuck with all 10 wheels turning and the truck not moving.

The more drive wheels - the deeper it gets stuck

Bert - I used to drive a 1953 REO 5-ton military 6X6 that was converted for the Colorado State Forest Service. That think would get stuck in it's own tracks on level ground. Fortunately it had a PTO winch that would pull down a building. Not sure how we ever got through the mud or across the desert with those old military tires back then

I got rid of my last 2 wheel drive in 1981, swore I would never own another one, so far so good .

No offense intended to the 2X owners, they just won't work for the things I like to do, and the places I like to go. Actually, when it's muddy or snowy I can't even get from my house to the highway in 2 wheel drive.

We've had this discussion before. So, if you have a 2-wheel drive and are stuck, I'll be there with my 4X4 but it will take you more than a can of beer!

Last year in Colorado, we tried to get onto our lot NW of Fort Collins. They had quite a bit of rain and even with 4wd we never made it. Then, we slid into a rock. The roads were extemely greasy. Without 4wd, we would have needed to be towed down. We also use 4wd low every time we go down off our lot. The low range can and should be used when high torque/low speed is required. But, that said, they sell 2 wd vehicles for a reason. I guess that's why Ford, GM, and Chrysler have 2wd, 4wd, standard cab, crew cab, club cab, short bed, long bed and all those other options. So many people, so many opinions. Pick what's best for you and enjoy it. As my hunting partner says - "life's best when you like what you've got."
