hot water heater
We have a 2005 3500 and would like to know how to turn the hw heater on electric. Also what we need to do to go on propane. We are leaving Monday and have already burned one element up, the dealer was not helpful.
Thanks

First, make certain that the water heater is full of water. For propane, just switch on the water heater inside the fifth. For Electric, switch on the electric switch that you have to remove the heater access panel from outside the fifth. This is a black rocker switch that probably has a metal clip associated with it to preclude AC being applied when it is inserted. To check the water heater for water, when you are hooked to city water, insure the heater bypass (ie. winterization heater bypass is not activated (this is a manual valve)) is closed. You can lift the preassure release valve lever and it will allow air and/or water to excape. When you have water flowing out the pressure valve, close it and you are set for operation.
This was long winded but I think it may help you.

BTW, for faster water heating, both electric and propane can be switched on.

reardon, first of all, you need to make certain the water heater has water in it. Once this is established, open the water heater access panel and look in the lower left corner of the compartment, you should see a rocker switch. You may or may not have to pull a cotter pin to turn the switch on. When this switch is in the on position, it will be running on electricity. To run on propane only, turn the electric switch off, turn the propane bottles on, then go inside the trailer and turn on the rocker switch next to the pump switch. You can run on both at the same time for faster recovery.
Sounds to me like you need to find another dealer, because the one you have doesn't seem to know anything.
On Edit - Looks like ilapah and I both got to you at the same time, lol.

Reardon,
In the hot water panel on the outside of your RV, there is a switch that can be put ON or OFF. In the ON position when you are attached to electric power, your HW heater will heat constantly. If you put it in the OFF position while attached to electric power, it will not heat, you will have to use the LP gas by flipping the switch on the idiot panel inside.
Now if that isn't confusing enough, PM me...
