I have gone through three pairs of "nerf bar" running boards on my truck for the same reason. I ended up with the Westin Platinum series and they are about as good as it is going to get. I like the look, but your correct the step placement on all three brands I tried was not the best. Good luck, I am sure someone will be along soon to give you more ideas.
