Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

Just recently took delivery of a 2022 3231CK. Planning our trip south to Florida for the winter and am going to avoid the DC area by using the CBBT. Any experience with this model through the tunnel? We had a MHC 305RL and that was ok. Just don't want to travel down the whole DelMarVa penninsula and find out just before the tunnel that we're over height. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know what the posted clearance height is for the tunnel but I just saw a short video that showed a couple semis in the tunnel. It looked like they still had a few inches of clearance.

My wife and I just traveled that way in September, to and from Myrtle Beach. The tunnel roof height is 13’6”. At the time we were towing a TT that was only 11’6” so no problem. I did notice that the big rigs looked like they had an inch or a little more to spare. I don’t know if I want to take my Montana High Country, 13’4”, through there. The other disconcerting thing is that the tunnel is two lanes, one in each direction. The lanes are only 10 ft wide with no shoulder to speak of. It definitely takes all you concentration with traffic flowing at 60mph.

I’d be interested to read if you take it. We are going to Cape Charles VA in April. The KOA we are staying is 500 yds before the CBBT toll booth.

Happy Thanksgiving.

We go that way US-13 all the time to avoid i95.
It's a nice drive.
I believe it is 13'6".
We are 13'4".
You will stop at the inspection station.
DW goes in the rig and turns off the RV fridge.
I go and turn off the propane tanks.
They will verify your propane tanks are off then send you on your way. Once you get through and are off the CBBT you can pull over and turn your tanks and RV fridge back on.

IF winds are greater than 35mph they have truck, RV and trailer restrictions (not allowed).
You can check their webpage for for any traffic advisory.

My niece and husband went through the tunnel for the first time and was in the left lane. He thought since it was hard to get in the right lane he wouldn’t stop to be checked and they wouldn’t stop traffic to check him. Oh yea they will and did.

Had that happen to us on the I464 Tunnel. We were on the left side of a Semi and didn't see the signs and check station, but they saw us. Got up to the entrance and the signal light was Red and an individual directing traffic thru, got to us and pointed off to the side. Fellow showed up in a few minutes and verified propane was off and we were on our way.

Ran my 3931 thru many times. Specs say my height is 13'5" Stop at propane check station and make sure all is off. Like others have said, a little nerve racking going thru the tunnel itself but I figure, hey the semis make it thru so can I.

We live in Va. Beach and travel across the CBBT about 3-4 times a year. Our High Country measures at 13'-4" on the truck and we have never had any issues. You should be fine.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel's web site says, ( Maximum Vehicle Height Permitted to cross this facility is 13' 6" ) I plan to cross this bridge in the future, I will remeasure our 3121 when I am hooked up to the truck again. Would like to keep our front ac and vent covers.

CBBT

I measured my rig hooked up to the truck came in as 13’3” then using a label maker put it on the steering wheel no mistakes as far as not remembering my height . I’ve done the CBBT tunnel many times. It is a bit white knuckle especially when tractor trailers are coming the opposite direction be mindful of the wall and the lines. Pulling a 2018 3561RL.

Cbbt clearance

I always use that route. Such a stress relief. My specs list my 370rd1 at 13' 4". The tunnels have a posted clearance of 13' 6".

CBBT

Hello PiilotEd:
We have a Montana 3791RD 2021. And we tow with a Chevrolet 2016 SRW HIigh Country 3500HD. The specifications says our height was 13.4 When we travel with our propane off. But little did we know that the CBBT has a beam that measures the height of your vehicle. And that what happen to us. According to the bridge we where to tall. We where instructed to pull over to the side of the road. And get re-measure there is someone there to instruct you what to do. We ended up having to lower our hitch in the bed of our truck. Luckily for us our hitch we can do so. We have a PullRite system with the clean bed technology system and a PullRite Model 2400 Super Lite hitch.

If it's safe for truckers, it's safe for you.

In addition to trailer height, weather is also a consideration. Occasionally wind restrictions prohibit RVs from crossing. A level 1 restriction (40 mph winds) is enough to prohibit RVs. We got caught by a wind restriction in September returning from the MOC rally. Had to spend a night on the eastern shore of Maryland before crossing a day later. No big deal. Found a nice CG we’d never have stayed if not for the restriction. Not a likely scenario, but keep weather in mind. See CBBT link below

Made it through the CBBT with no problem. Before the trip, I was able to measure my height hooked to the truck at 13’ 5”. Thanks all for your replies and comments.
