Battery issues for 2020 HC 331rl

My batteries no longer seem to be charging like they should. They are two years old, I didn’t properly unhook them like I should of the past two winters. Do you think I need to replace the batteries or would this be something Else like something that charges the batteries?

You can take them to any auto parts store and they can test them.
Lead acid batteries (FLA) don't like to be Discharged more than 50%. It greatly shortens their life.

My 2019 batteries finally bit the dust. They were Group 24 wet cells. One tested fine and the other was completely shot. I replaced them with slightly larger Group 27 Duracell AGM Marine/RV batteries from Sam's Club. Both new batteries fit the battery boxes and seem to be working just fine. I was to blame for not taking care of the original batteries, by not checking the water level. The new batteries have a 30 month warranty and get 5 star reviews.

What I learned the hard way is that when you drop the rig off they will be dead in a day or two if not hooked up to shore power. Quicker if a resi-fridge is installed. I put a disconnect on the ground cable so they won't discharge.

If you discharged them all the way they probably are ruined.

Auto parts place tested batteries. One bad one ok, they recommended replacing both. Put batteries and and have plugged into house. Batteries seem to be recharging. Residential fridge working. Only thing that won’t turn on is the inverter underneath that runs fridge of battery for travel. Any ideas why that’s not turning on? Have a camping trip planned this week and thinking I will just go without that working. Any reason why I shouldn’t?

Be sure the separate disconnect, in the battery compartment, for the inverter is ON. Then check there is 12V to the inverter.

Disconnect is on, are there any fuses for that inverter somewhere?

There is a fuse inline in front of the disconnect switch. But nothing after that as far as I know. Did you check for 12V at the inverter?

This morning I went out to check as I had the fridge running and a couple lights and checked the batteries levels in the panel and they were down to 2/3 so I must have something else going on right? My batteries are obviously not charging while plugged into my house? Any suggestions? Starting to think I’m gonna have to cancel my trip and take the camper in.

Yes I did, all that needs the batteries is lights and the furnace correct? Everything else will work off shore power? I am thinking of bringing a battery charger if that’s the case and going on my trip and taking into dealer after.

It sounds like the batteries are not being charged since the level is low and it was plugged into shore power all night. The first thing I would check are the fuses that are (generally) on the converter. If during the battery change out the + - cables were reversed it will blow the fuses

Generally the converter is located in the lower front storage compartment. Unscrew the bulkhead wall and pull it back and you'll see an electrical box with wires all around. The fuses I've seen are the blade style like what newer cars have. Probably two 40 amp fuses.

I located converter and checked fuses. All good. I also unplugged shore power and turned on lights and other things and I don’t see the fan turning on the converter? It must mean it needs to be replaced?

Does anyone think it would be a problem to go on my planned trip for 5 days with full 50 amp shore power with this issue? I was thinking I would bring a battery charger to charge the batteries if it got low.

Ok now I feel stupid. I just noticed the converter breaker was off. I flipped it and the batteries now show full power. I still don’t hear or see that fan on the converter working. The other thing I can’t get on is the inverter for fridge

Good find. I wouldn't worry about that fan. They run when they need to. Can't help with the other issue. I have a non residential fridge.

The converter is easy to replace and not very expensive either. Going on a trip with your battery charger should be okay as long as you watch the state of charge levels and don't let your batteries get below 50%.
