Spare Tire Mount Damage

A couple of times, I have lost the G rated spare tire when backing into a raised campsite with my 2011 3750FL that has the tire cable and tee in the back underneath the trailer. Well, on our current trip to New England states (specifically happened in NY), I was leaving a parking lot that was lower than the road. The back of the trailer dropped with the elevation difference. Not only did it drop the tire, the tire rack system is bent to the point where the gearing won't even turn the cable up or down.

The spare tire hangs very low on all these models. Has anyone else had this problem of the tire coming loose from the cable and tee mount? What has been your solutions? I don't want to add a tire rack to the back of the trailer, and of course there is no bumper. Currently hauling the spare in the truck bed, taking up more room.

Have never experienced the drag issue you describe. Have had the spare sag during travel. I use a ratchet cargo strap securing the tire to the mount just for piece of mind. Did ruin a mount years ago by cranking up the cable without the spare jamming the cable/gearbox beyond fixing.

I've always wondered if anybody ever had a problem with the spare hanging so low. When I had my Sailun tires put on the tire shop commented about it being so low. So far for me no problems.

I have drug the rear frame but not the spare tire. As a matter of fact I guess I should remove that spare and put one of the G614’s I have in nits place.

If you have not found a solution. You should probably re-invent the wheel and move the whole assembly closer to the wheels. Only once have I had a drag issue and it wasn't the spare just the rear. It was at a gas station and didn't drag for long plus it was down hill but still sounded nasty. I stopped and inspected it and removed some paint on the rear beams. Did not hit the tire though and the ladder was fine. Little touch up paint was all that was required.
I had a problem with the spare tire loss on an old F350. Looked on line and found a winch assembly for a song and a dance. Purportedly for a f150. How much difference could there be. It was a dorman brand. for the short money it was worth the risk. It worked with a little wiggling of the screw holes. It would of been better if I drilled them out oversize.
MY point is you can get something else if your's is too damaged to repair and make something aftermarket work for you. Unless you are the type of it has to be original equipment OEM or nothing.

All you can do is remove it and try straightening it out until you do it again. I have had that pleasure twice already, in Oregon and Maine. Just straighten it as best you can. Inconvenient, but cheaper then another one.

Although I never did drag the tire and mount I always felt it was way too low and should have been located closer to the rear axle.
Here is what I did to resolve the issue after replacing my GY Marathons with GY G614's. I have a long box truck so this may not be an option on a short box truck. The rack fits in the hitch rails and is locked so cannot be removed, the tire is secured with 2 special nuts.
It serves another purpose and that is I cannot drop the trailer on my bed rails as the pin will hit the tire/rim before coming in contact with the rails. Solved two possible problems.
If I am going to be parked for any length of time I just remove the tire and rack although I seldom used this space anyway.

At least 40k traveling miles with all kinds of dips and humps gone over and never had a problem. Have a ratchet strap to make certain the cable doesn't unwind on it's own, but that's never been needed either. Maybe yours is mounted further back than typical?

Yep, I was able to straighten it out by placing a bottle jack on cribbing and forcing it back into place. Seems to work fine, although the shaft is slightly bent now so it wobbles when it's turned to raise and lower the cable and tee.

Phil I am not sure if you were referring to my post and pictures or not but if you were then my tire mount is home made. I made it using 1" square tubing, a bit of flat bar for the tabs to the hitch rails and a piece of 1/8" plate I cut and bent to attach the tire. I purchased a set of 2 lock devices for the pins that hold it in the rails and lock it with a padlock which is visible in one of the pictures.
Easy project if you have a welder and a chop saw or angle grinder with metal cutting blades.

ohiomoen ... if you run with the fiver nose high as many do with the newer pickups ... you decrease the rear clearance and increase the chances of contact. I just don't get why the really new trucks sit so bed high with the bed box taller as well. It makes it tough to pull level and have adequate bed rail clearance..
