Fresh Water Pump

Our water pump works fine when using the water faucets and flushing of the toilet. But at random it kicks on for a second or so. This morning the times were 7:50 am, 8:02 am, 8:17 am, 8:28 am,8:37 am. and 8:45 am, etc.

Has anyone experienced this and if so what causes this?? When we leave during the day I turn it off completely.

Also, thanks to all who responded to the hide-a-bed mattress issue.

Sounds like you may have small leak like maybe a faucet. It is trying to maintain pressure

I would say that if the pump kicks in you have a leak somewhere. That has been my experience with RV's anyway. Hopes this helps.

It doesn't have to be a leak in a faucet. It could be a leak in the pump itself allowing pressurized water to bleed back through the pump.

It's been my experience that they all do this eventually.

What is the process to check the pump for a leak? Are they repairable or does it have to be replaced?

Thanks for responding - these problems can be very frustrating.

If the pump is bleeding pressure back to the fresh water tank an easy fix is to add a check valve in the line just before the pump.

Mine has done the same thing over the past few months. I looked all over for a leak and couldn't find one. Eventually I noticed that the water flow from the pump was starting to lessen. At one point the pump couldn't build enough pressure anymore to shut itself off. For a weekend we had to manually turn the pump on and off when we needed water. The fix was simple....replaced the pump. All is well again.

I believe these pumps have a diaphragm that can crack or somehow get a pinhole leak that will leak pressure and cause the periodic short runs of the pump to restore the pressure. RV dealers should have a kit to fix this. It's been a long time since I did it but it was not a hard fix other than getting the pump out of it's home can be a bear sometimes.

The other possibility is a water leak somewhere, like others said. This might be just about anywhere there's a water line, including in the belly.

anytime you have a drop in pressure it will kick on. in our older units the would do the same.
