Trailer Fault

I own a 2009 Montana 3400RL. While towing my RV down to Arizona from North Dakota I started to get a message from my F350 towing break that I am having a "Trailer Fault" I have checked the wiring and find nothing wrong, I have looked all the way back to the wheels. I have asked my dealer if he could give me an idea what it could be with no results. Does anyone out there have any idea what it might be? Jim

If you will take a gander at the dieselstop.com forum, you will see a few mentions of this problem, primarily related to wet connections. May or may not be the problem, but worth checking. And, welcome to the MOC forum!!!

When I had this problem on my 2008 F250 it was a loose ground wire on the connector that was installed in my truck bed causing the problem. After it was tightened up the problem went away and has not returned.

I was getting a short fault and an overload fault with my Prodigy controller on our way back from the Fall Rally. I found a bad magnet coil with my multimeter, so I just cut and capped off the wires on that one wheel for the rest of the trip home. We were traveling through a lot of heavy rain at the time, and I think that the magnet windings got wet somehow and went bad. The brakes and controller worked flawlessly after I isolated that one wheel. Although I only had three working brakes for the rest of the way home, it was much better than having the intermittent and unpredictable stopping power that was occurring with the bad magnet in the loop.

Now that it has had a chance to dry out, I will test it for the proper resistance. If it reads good, I might try to seal it with some potting epoxy and put it back into service until I install the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust brakes that I have waiting in the wings for when my original brakes are used up.

That issue has usually been a problem in the camper wiring. Check for a short where the wires go into the wheel hub or it may be inside the hub.

I receive that message when I tow in the rain. I have never gotten it in dry conditions.

I got that messasge once when the break away wire pulled out of the trailer brake. You might have something wrong in that.

We had a similar problem with our then new 2005 3400 and 2005 F350 dually. Kept getting a "Trailer Disconnect" alarm, as we were coming down a steep grade between Reno and Sacramento. ( That was fun !!!) Naturally, neither Ford nor Keystone would take ownership of the problem. We had the Ford checked, no problem found. Our Montana dealer was back in Las Vegas so we couldn't take it back there.
A small, non Montana selling, dealer in the Sacramento area finally agreed to take a look at the 3400 and initially couldn't find a problem. They decided to replace some "clips" near the wheels just in case that was potentially the issue.
We've not had this problem for over five years now.

I got the same error message with my F350 last fall. Took it to the closest RV dealer, who couldn't find anything wrong with the Ford wiring but did find that the wire going to the magnet on the right rear wheel of our Big Sky was starting to fray--a common problem with these Montanas as Richfaa noted above. The insullation didn't seem to be worn thru yet, but I had the mechanic tape the wire anyway and tie it away from the wheel rim. No further trailer fault alerts since that time, and we've driven several thousand miles since then.
