Ford going to Cummins Diesel - Montana Owners Club

I was told from the local Ford shop that starting in June one can order the Super Duty with the Cummins diesel. I asked them what was Dodge going to do? Their response...Dodge is going to be offering the Mercedes diesel in the Ram. Anyone else heard this?

That would be a good thing but I will not believe it till I see a Cummins in a Super Duty.

It has been possible to order the Cummins in a Ford for years, in the larger size Ford, F550 and up. Would be nice to see the Ford finally get a good engine, would consider getting one.

When we bought our last truck, the Ford dealer told us that Ford owned a large stake in Cummings...and was disappointed that they didn't offer it in the pickup line. DW asked if he wasn't a Ford dealer, what truck would he buy...a Dodge Cummings...we wound up with a Ram w/Cummings.
Who knows what's next with the goings on in the auto business.

Well Ford is going to have to offer something - as I heard they severed the tie with Navstar. I also heard they were building their own?

Ford is building their own. It is called the Scorpion. They did severe their ties with Navistar. Ford does not own a large stake in Cummings. That is a urban legend that has been around for a long time. The new Ford diesel will be built in Mexico.This is all pretty much old news that is available via media sources. It appears that Ford has made up their mind about the new Diesel. A search using the search engine of your choice will tun up volumes of information on the subject. Here is ONE source of information

Ford at one time owned a 20% share of Cummins. When they sold their heavy truck division years ago they sold their shares. This was what we were told when I worked for Cummins. A friend of mine had was part owner of a Dodge dealership and was told by Chrysler that they signed a long term contract with Cummins to supply engines for the Ram.

I think Rich pretty much has this one figured out. HA! I ran into a guy a couple years ago in South Louisiana; he swore up and down the PS engine was built in China. I don't even bother to argue with his kind.

I will believe it when I see it. This has been talked about for yearssss now on the internet. Ford needs to go outside the box and try something like a Caterpillar motor. If they go with Cummins then you may as well just purchase the Dodge. Dodge

I read where Cat is lowering engine production by around 40% due to emission standards. I suppose they didn't get on with the "program" like the other diesel manufacturers did.

My understanding is between the emissions standards and Peterbilt building their own engines now that CAT was looking to get out of the Over the Road diesels and just stick with equipment. I thought I heard that 2010 or 2012 would be the last year.

Does anybody know for sure?

Sources say Ford continues to make good progress testing its upcoming in-house-designed 6.7-liter V-8 diesel engine. The new engine will replace the Navistar-sourced 6.4-liter V-8 Power Stroke diesel engine in Ford's heavy-duty pickups by 2011. Code-named Scorpion, the new motor is said to pack plenty of sting -- plus a few other surprises.

The latest power targets are said to be more than 390 horsepower and 720 pounds-feet of torque. Today's Power Stroke diesel is rated at 350 hp and 650 pounds-feet.

Scorpion fuel economy is expected to improve by 3 mpg or more compared to the current Power Stroke. Helping the Scorpion's mileage will be a new six-speed automatic transmission, like the 2009 Ford F-150 will have.

The Scorpion is said to share several key traits with GM's revolutionary new 4.5-liter Duramax V-8 diesel engine. Intake and exhaust flow through the cylinder heads is reversed (relative to conventional diesel engine design) with the exhaust exiting directly into dual sequential turbos sitting in the engine's valley. The Scorpion will also use lighter aluminum cylinder heads, abandoning the cast-iron heads found in today's 6.4-liter Power Stroke.

Unlike the Duramax, the Scorpion diesel will continue to use an overhead valve engine design, rather than overhead cam.

The new 6.7-liter diesel engine will be manufactured in Mexico.

How important is this motor? The move is expected to permanently end Ford's longtime use of Navistar-built diesel engines in its heavy-duty pickups, due to an ongoing legal battle between the two companies over warranty and cost issues related to the old 6.0-liter V-8 Power Stroke (model years 2003-07). Ford has used Navistar diesels in its F-Series trucks since 1982.

It's not yet known if the Scorpion will continue to use the Power Stroke name or if Ford will create a brand new label for the engine. Whatever it's called, Ford's competitors are sure to feel the Scorpion's sting!

I'm suprized that one of the big 3 does not try using an electric system w/ diesel genset for battery charging, simular to a freight train engine. Can't you just imagine a F350 with a 20ton GVW. Steve

That would be very neat BUT you know as well as I do the energy deptartments, BP,Texaco,Union Oil, wont let that happen they will loose money and profit unless they have control of electric motors too.
I probably wont be able to use that in a tow vehicle be dead probably with all of the procrastinating the auto industry does.

HOLY MOLEY.... I just built me a 2009 , Dodge, 6.7, dually, 3500, quad cab, dually, Laramie.. From our local dealer up in Ohio. The Specs are a bit less that our 08 Ford but well within 3400 spec's... sticker 54K + almost exactly the same as the same truck 09 Ford. All kinds of incentives including employee pricing....Cost to me 44,069.. Trade on my 08 Ford 30,150 to 33,300 sight unseen. That is a difference of
10,769 to 13,919.. the Ford is paid for. I am glad I am not home.... Helen gave me ..that look. My Ford looks old and puney...
