Well, up here you can probably hang around the casinos in all the gas stations, playing with what money you have, until the line for the free cash forms. Once you pick up your free cash, you can get right back to your spot at the slots or whatever. Funny--I have to go to work every day to get money. I just can't figure out how to sit in a smoky, dark place all day every day and put money I have but don't work for into the machines day after day.

Political commentary deleted.

Thank you. RVWheels, Admin. MOC

As for Casinos, we went to the Hard Rock Casino while in Tampa Florida, business was booming. The smoke was so bad we only stayed about a hour, couldn't stand the stench, and there were people there that was hooked up to oxgyen tanks, totally unbelieveable. But we donated our $50.00 to the Native Americans. GBY....

Many commodities in our area are suffering like the auto industry of course, as well clothing, furniture, but things like electronics, liquor stores, travel and of course casinos are booming. Am I missing something here? Credit card spending is rampant, guess it's time to spend like there may be no tomorrow and after that get in line for that free cash once Phil figures out where the line starts.

But Vegas and Atlantic city reported business considerably down. Airlines are reporting travel down. Circuit city(electronics) went bankrupt. Best buy reporting big losses.Comsumer spending at a all time low. Unemployment at a all time high..I am confused??????

Rich I am confused as well, very confused indeed. Maybe it's just in our area of the Canadian Prairies but people in general don't seem to think there is much of a problem and yet spending is down on necessities including clothing, housing, and cars, I guess the REAL BIG ticket items, but not on what I refer to as feel good items. We have three small rv shows in this area put on by individual dealers and we went to the first of three last week and guess what? Sales are up with more sold stickers than I have ever seen at this particular show before????? People are still taking warm vacations on there credit cards for gosh sakes, except for us it seems. It's time to spend what we can to make us feel good and the bad news will go away.

I had a MULTI-Line reply ready and figured it was too political -- suffice it to say I work for the State and we are already in a hiring freeze, and looking at the potential of a pay reduction for next year as well as furloughs (also known as 'forced leave without pay'). However, not as bad as Arizona which announced state employees get to take 15 days off between mid-January and the end of June, also without pay. When you figure out where to apply for the money, please let the rest of us know (if I find out first, I will do the same!!).....

All indicators are down. You don't have to listen to the doom and gloomers you can look it up for yourself. However..here are still plenty of folks who have not been affected and these folks are spending money. This is a great time for them. Our daughter and Son-In-Law just purchased a incredible home in Ft Myers beach on the back bay right at the end of a channel at a ridiculous Price, Great for them...not so great for the owner who had to give it up.. Wish we needed a new RV....this is the time to buy. Tell Disney how good it is for the ordinary folks who do not have them money and are NOT showing up at the park or how good it is for the folks who have the money are are there because of the huge discounts in travel, lodgings, Park packages. You could still by tickets for Daytona yesterday. Bad for the local economy as attendance is way down...good for the folks who have the money..great deals...there is always two sides.

Cup half full or half empty?

10 % unemployment is still 90% EMPLOYMENT

not sure how much $$ those 90% make, but, still they are employed.

I'm with you Carol! Things are not as bad as the media wants you to think they are. It all comes back to financial responsibility. Those who have been are not having any problems, those who have been foolish are now paying the price.

hey there Dave, long time between posts for you, how's ya be??

back on topic,

let me tell you that even with 90% employment, those of us that are on frozen income levels, as in retirement and not working to add to the cofers are sure feeling the inflation.

but, inflation is NOT employment.

still 90 % employed.

Well I'm feeling good now, and its raining here. There are some folks feel as I do. For some who can remember in 1980 when my Hero took office unemployment was close 10% and interest rates were about 20%. So we have been there and done that. I look out my window and see the RV park here is about 80% full, and RV's are comming and leaving daily. The ones that are close by are full until April.

Is the country having problems you bet we are! Things are happening just like in the late 70's. However this time we are going into debt faster than anytime in History. And thats what got us here is debt. Living above their means, spending more than their making. Wake up !!! thats just what we are going to do now. There are jobs if you want to work.

Why should the ones who did the right thing have to bail out bad investments and bad decisions. Monday isn't going to be a good day for me. GBY.....

Remember 90% of America is working.

90% of people still employed, perhaps 90% of retail sales still happening. I certainly feel much better looking at the reverse side of things. Still not that good but a whole lot better than what the media is bombarding us with every day. Perhaps if the media (and gov't) could report it as Carol does their would be a whole lot more consumer confidence and until that returns our problems will continue to mount. Thanks Carol, I needed that.

What is scary is what the impact of 10% unemployment has had on the overall economy. You know 90% of the workforce is still employed and things are dismal.Do not know what this "stimulus" package will bring. I watched the Senate proceedings on that and saw business as usual. I am willing to give it a chance. Folks need jobs. Don't care how it happens. Don't care which party takes credit. Tax cuts and spending are OK as long as we get a return on the dollars spent. I hope the politicians help to make it work instead of playing politics. Consumer confidence is good..but 10% or more of the consumers have no jobs or money to spend and that has had a huge impact regardless of the 90% who are working. We are hoping for the best..there are no alternatives. We will have no money coming from the stimulus package and hope the money gets to the folks who need it????

Historically, the WPA, would you consider that a stimulus package, I might

Provided us as genealogists with a fabulous set of resources, okkkk, so that does not interest you.

How bout the wonderful parks and such that the CCC built??? we are still enjoying those today, and the old stone work they did, well, artwork, sorta?? I think it is.

In 50 years or so, they will look back and decide if our stimulous package worked as well.

Please, no political snarlyness, just pointing out a different point of view, please no political, oooohhhh, I said that.

Unlike some I do not take heart from the fact that 90% of the work force is still employed. If only a ten percent jobless rate is causing the chaos that we are seeing in our country and worldwide I'd hate to see what a twenty or thirty percent rate would do!

No. I take just the opposite view. If the jobless rate continues as it appears to be going it will not be too long before we're looking at a fifteen to twenty percent figure. If the Recovery Act does what it is supposed to do then perhaps we won't get that bad.

But I'm concerned that there are so many folks out there that think they are immune from the effects of this economic catastrophe and that somehow it does not apply to them. Folks! We're ALL in this together. One way or another we all are effected by this terrible process. And come Tuesday I, for one, will celebrate the President signing the Recovery Act legislation. We need all the help we can get!

I also do not believe that this economic downturn is the fault of the workers! Tell the folks in Goshen who worked for the RV manufacturers that the reason they lost their job is because they were living way beyond their means! Please tell me you don't really believe that.

Travel safely,

HamRad

OK, here is what I really believe

That a lot of this, NOT all, but a lot of it has to do with the fact that a some very greedy investors/dudes/idiots/errrr, people, made some fast HUGE $$$$ off a bunch of us.

They took it wayyyyy far out and started this land slide, and now, there may not be a way to stop it, hopefully, they can slow it down.

They told us, invest in the stock market, your house is worth 30 % more than last year, and 50% more than the year before, and somehow we bought into it, maybe greed on our parts too.

And they jacked up the price of fuel to the point that many of us simply could not afford to drive, to work, for groceries, forget for recreation, we could barely get to the grocery store.

This is NOT political, it is greed.

That is my simple answer. Greed took down the Roman Empire, it can take us down too.

YOU CANNOT LEGISLATE GREED AWAY.

The landslide has begun, I hope someone can throw a few bolders out there and stop it.

And, I will say it again, I do NOT believe this is political. It ain't red or blue, it is RED/WHITE/AND BLUE, as in American, cept, that ain't really true either, cause it is the entire world.

Greed, I want bigger, better, more more more. BLAHHHHHH

But 90% are working. NOT POLITICAL

SIGHHHHHHH
