What to do in Maine in summer 2006

I'll edit and expand this later but here is someting to wet your appetite.

Things to do in Maine in the summer of 2006

1. Boothbay Harbor

Windjammer Days June 27, 28 Web site boothbayharbor.com

Cabbage Island Clambakes Web site cabbageislandclambakes.com

Whale Watches

Stay at:

Little Ponderosa, heavily wooded, near tidal stream, mosquitos may be in issue.. It is my favorite however. Short drive to downtown.

Shore Hills: Most short stays are put out in the open. It is really a big parking lot. There are better sites back in the woods but you have to ask. Less mosquitos. About two miles closer to downtown. They have a shuttle sometime Favorite restaurant Lobsterman’s Wharf in East Boothbay

DO drive around Ocean Point, South Port and Linekin Bay
Don’t even think about hauling your coach downtown.

2. Freeport

LL Bean
Outlet stores
Desert of Maine

Stay at Durham Freeport KOA or Desert of Maine, I prefer the KOA

3. Yarmouth

Clam Festival July 21-23 Web Site clamfestival.com

Both above campgrounds are relatively close

4. Rockland

Maine Lobster Festival July 2-6 Web Site mainelobsterfestival.com
Ferry to Vinalhaven You don’t really need a vehicle but there is/or was a taxi on the island

5. Camden

Tons of stuff to do. Check camdenmaine.org This place is pretty touristy but great food and great scenery. Check out Camden Hills State Park

6. Bar Harbor Again, tons of stuff to do.

Stay at Narrows, Narrows Too or KOA. We stay at Timberlands for a variety of reasons but the other three are probably better but also more expensive and closer to town.

Thanks, David, very valuable suggestions. I will keep them on file. It's about time we made a visit to New England. We enjoyed an auto trip to Bar Harbor several years ago and took a short afternoon cruise on a sailing vessel. We stayed in a very historic bed and breakfast just outside of town.

We enjoyed being with you on our short visit to the Valley. Hope we get to meet again.

I'd like to add a drive through Arcadia National Park as a must see, at least we thought it was a great way to spend a day.

Arcadia, can do MORE than 1 day!

Bar Harbor: Whale watching boat trip! FUN!

While in the general area, stop at road side stands and have lobster, lobster and more lobster!! Then ask the locals for suggestions on where to eat lobster, they sent us WAYYYYYYYY down some little point of land, to where the boats came in, and they unloaded the lobster and cooked not 15 feet from unloading. GROANNNN, So good you cannot believe!! I believe Al ate 9 lobsters (WHOLE lobsters) in 7 days! And, no hives!

Thanks, David. We won't get there this Fall as we had hoped but are now shooting for next year. I will save this thread and all its iterations. It will be a good guide for us. Thanks.
