Yes he did, and I gave him ballpark figures, 9 to 12 mpg.

Gas mileage is like reloaders. They go out and shoot one good group, less than a half inch. They carry that target in their wallet and think they can always shoot groups like that. Don’t show me that target show me the one before that one and the one after.
Gas mileage is the same. Tell me the average mileage you get not on one trip at 60.

Ford F450 6.7L, 4:30 gearing pulling approx 17K coach. I'm lucky to get 9 but as many have said, always have a headwind (Kansas winds where we think 'light and variable' is anything below 30 MPH), always driving up hill (Kansas really is not all flat), and most of the time at 70 mph (I-70).

I got 12.3mpg with a 2012 Ford F350 SRW pulling a sOB 40 ft 16200 GVW 5th wheel. That was the average for going from California to Connecticut. I set the cruise control to 60mph and enjoy the scenery. I suspect the new Fords get less mph because they increased the torque and hp. That possibly true for the newer Cummings as well. HP and torque require fuel to achieve that power if required. Also, friction increases by square of the speed, so driving faster and head winds see an exponential increase in friction.

Don't forget the half gallon or so of diesel used up every time your vehicle does a regeneration. All three of manufactures are working to cut down weight and improve aerodynamics to help mileage but personally, I don't see any improvement. I know that my mileage will improve once I retire and have more time to travel (read 60-65 mph) but for now we need to get there sooner so the right foot tends to be a little heavier .

I average 13-14mpg all around driving, but as soon as my F350 6.0 starts pulling, its 10-11, and I consider that good.

I’ve been getting between 12.7 to 13.6 When towing my 17 3820FK with my 15 F350 DRW (13.6 was pulling from San Diego to Astoria Oregon). Around town I’ve been getting 16.8 with no load. No special oil additives. I run diesel kleen every other tank. I change both fuel filters during oil changes.

When we do as MPG check which now is not very often we fill the tank until one more pull and it will overflow the filler neck.

I run in 5th gear 1850- 1950 RPM
65 - 70 MPh
10.5 - 11.2 MPG unless of course a head wind then it's between 8.5- 9.5
I run Amsoil Cetane Boost in every fill up unless the cost of fuel is cheap enough to outweigh the Cetane Boost cost
I have changed all gear boxes to Amsoil Synthetic at 12K miles, tranny lube is Chrysler recommended

I know these are Diesel engines but I checked some very good scientific testing that was done on the 3.5 Ecoboost engine. I would suspect a diesel isn’t much different. Gas mileage went down 20% from 60 MPH to 70. Then add in wind a head wind or tail wind differences in the road grade and driving habits different in temperatures it’s no wonder these figures are all the place.
I would bet any of the trucks driven the same place same day same speed, same every thing there would be no verifiable difference in the fuel mileage. They all have about the same size engine same manufacturer for the fuel injection system same compression ratio, again almost the same everything.
How could there be any verifiable difference in fuel mileage?

2018 3500 dually with 4.10 gears, 9.5 to 10.6, worst 8.5 with 40mph head winds, best 11.9 with a nice tail wind. Non towing, 19.7 average at 67 mph, hand calculated from San Jose to Vegas, 545 miles with several 4000 foot climbs. Yes I drive it slow............and I tow at 60mph..........

2017 F350 SRW pulling 3731FL from GA to NY 1000 mi. hooked up all the way 11.8mpg over 4 days. I set the cruise at 67. Comparing to Dave set at 60 seems about right. Highway speed do make a difference IMHO

IN my 2010 F350 with the 6.4 I would get 8-9 in that same trip.

I only dream about 15mpg--when not pulling. My Ford gets horrible mileage when not pulling. I'm jealous.

2006 Dodge Cummings, best ever was 16.7 up the 5 in Ca. Unusually good, no wind or other issues. One thing I noted to mdw was that mileage often increases as much as 2 mpg late in the evening. Must be humidity and/or air density. I think there may be engineers that could replicate there conditions to increase mpg all the time. Just saying!

When driving in hilly terrain, I find I get worse mileage with cruise control. CC can’t anticipate hills, so it tries to accelerate after you start to slow; this wastes fuel. I will accelerate gradually as I approach the hill. CC does have an advantage when descending hills because it utilizes the variable turbo vanes as a poor man’s jake brake. Also, on steep hills, I will manually shift to keep the revs in the sweet spot (2000 to 2500 rpm).

My typical mileage is in the 11 to 12 range, but I have seen 8.5 on one trip in a very strong headwind.
