After spending the scorching hot summer here in southern Arizona I finally decided we needed an efficient quiet air conditioning system.
MRCOOL DIY mini split fit that bill. It's designed* with the do-it-yourself person in mind. With a few modifications I managed to install the compressor on a platform mounted on the rear bumper. The air handler is hung above our refrigerator.
The result is a quiet efficient air conditioning system using only 10 amps. We can't hear it running keeping our Montana Mountaineer 295rkd in the 70's when outside is over 100.

They are the most efficient HVAC systems made. We had a geothermal in our home. When the compressor went bad we replaced it with a mini split and our electric bill went down. It will heat down to minus 15, which we never see. Our school system was installing geothermal. Not any more they have recently started installing mini splits. They are cheaper to install and cheaper to run.
They are best suited for homes that aren’t broken in a lot of rooms, like a camper.
If you have an older AC the SEER will probably be about 10. A new mini can go up to at least 33 probably more now.

I have been looking real hard at the Mini Splits for our Montana as the two OEM roof units took a heck of a beating while we were full time in the desert. Also looking at them for our enclosed trailer conversion that is currently in progress and even for our sticks and bricks back in Arkansas.


For sure they seem really popular with the enclosed trailer conversion crowd. I would say at least 50-75% of the folks on the facebook group we joined are going that route.

I have installed a few mini splits where I volunteer my time [3 years full-time and now as needed at Diamond Willow Ministries.]

Questions that are crossing my mind as I investigate:
1) Will they take the bouncing of a trailer?
2) Remove the roof top units if I do.
3) Running [protecting] the lines
4) 240VAC or a 120VAC unit. [Leaning towards a 120VAC as we do camp at 30A only places]
5) Thinking - I don't have a generator, putting the compressor half in there, with the doors open would I have enough air flow

Thoughts? Anyone else.

I have traveled more than 30,000 miles since installed no problems.
Didn't remove rooftop ac.
120v for me but have seen others
Make sure all lines are secure.

For either of you. Are the lines pre-charged? Or do you have to charge the system after installation?

30,000 miles is good enough for me!

I've install both pre-charged [Mr. Cool] and non pre-charged. In both cases I still had an HVAC guy make the final connection so lines fit "just so." But that was a personal choice.

The roof top uses 120VAC 20Amp, so I'm thinking of hijacking the my roof top A/C unit circuit, removing the unit and sealing it up.

Looks like this is my winter project.
