Stalagmites in ice cube tray??

Has anyone heard of this? Several times our ice cube trays have little spikes of ice coming out and UP from the tray. Is there a new anti gravity system in the Montana line.

I've had them! Every ice cube should come with the little handle.

Ice expands when it freezes, but the middle freezes last. I've always thought that's just the pressure escaping.

Actually, there was a program on tv that explained this being caused by air inside the not quite frozen top layer that pushes upwards and freezes a tube around the slow to rise bubble, which freezes over its top at the end. Some cases where top is left open. We have only had peaks that rose to a max of 1/2 inch in our ice trays. John
