New Chevy 3500 Dually

Picking up my 2015 "Chevy 3500 dually Thurs morning. Getting concerned over bed height and ability to adjust hitch and/or pin box to keep trailer level. Also, I keep my rig in a warehouse with 14' roll-up doors. Now beginning to wonder about clearing front AC.

Anybody deal with height issues with the 2015 3500 trucks? I am moving my Valley hitch to my new truck.

Guess I should have considered this more before I signed the papers!

Congrats on the new truck. My neighbor has a 14 gmc dually with a 38 foot Jayco designer with two ac units. We both pass thru a local state road 13.8 overpass in Norlina with our fifth wheels with no problem. Not sure his box is the same as the 15 and he is 4wd. He has sufficient rail height but sits about an inch high in the front.

14' doors should be no problem.

Should not be, however brochure reflects a height of 13.5 with front AC, and the new pickups have higher beds which is forcing some folks to run higher in the front, because they cannot adjust to level tow. That needs to be factored in. If a 4X4, that also is a factor since the truck will sit higher. Swapping to LT tires if equipped with the Marathons/Tow Kings will also increase the height depending on the replacement size. All that needs to be factored in. Should fit, but could be close.

If you are going to be over 14' in height you will probably have much more to worry about than the storage door. I would be shocked if the new dually is putting you much above 13'5", even if it is a 4x4 and the trailer has bigger G614 tires on it.

I hope you are all right. Will find out in the morning. Given that so many people buy these trucks to haul fifth wheels you wouldn't think it would be an issue, but it sure looks alot higher than my 09 2500 4wd.

Our second 15k Air makes us exactly 13.9 high, with all tires inflated properly. Sounds high, but it's exactly 13.9. Checked and double checked using 14 ft doors! We duck a lot ! Dealer had me sign a statement before leaving the lot!

Steve, I was concerned about that, too. Had not had the new GMC hooked up to the old Challenger until this last weekend. Us and some friends and family took our assortment of RVs up to South Haven, MI for the Labor Day weekend. But, a couple days before the trip, I decided I needed to back under just to see and make sure I had no issues. Good thing I did! To my dismay, I discovered that the tri-fold bed cover I bought for the truck a week or two after I bought it, had to come off. That was because, the shock absorber on the TrailAir hitch bumped against the cover and would not allow the hitch to lock the kingpin. Once the cover was off, which is easy to remove, had no other issues!

Did learn also, that this new GMC with the LML Duramax and 6 speed Allison is a completely different "animal" than what the old 2005 Silverado was!

So, put the old hitch in the bed. You should be just fine.

Hey Dale, congrats on new truck. I guess on topic of depth of new beds, is how many inches do you have from truck rail to bottom of the 5th wheel? You'd be cutting it close if that measurement was 4 inches or less as the 5th wheel could come down on the truck rails during uneven turns. I know it happened to me sometime back and bent my truck rails.

Dennis, the height of the bed rails from the ground on the old Silverado and the new GMC differed by less than an inch. I don't remember the exact measurements but I do remember thinking this was not much of a concern. Also, when I backed under the pin box of the 5er last week before the trip, I had to raise the front of the 5er just like before when I hooked up to the Silverado. And it was with the Silverado that I spotted the 5er where it was until this last weekend. As far as distance between the bed rails and upper deck, I don't know the measurements. My guess it is at least 6 inches.....perhaps more. Next time it is hooked up and setting level, I will get that measurement. The one thing I was most worried about was the height of the 5th wheel plate from the ground. I found out it was very close to the same as in the old truck. If the plate would have been significantly higher in the new truck...I would have had a problem backing under the pin box.

UPDATE: So, my worries were pretty much unfounded. I have just under 5" clearance above the bed rails, and the trailer sits very slightly nose high. Found out trailer came from the factory with the axles already flipped. I could move my Mor Ryde down one more bolt, but then it would really be nose high.

So, leaving on a long trip Saturday and will keep a close eye on the separation when truck/trailer encounter elevation changes, but so far so good. Love the new truck, but what else would you expect after spending that much money!

Thanks, Dennis! I can sure tell the horsepower and torque differences between the old Duramax and the new. And, the old was nothing to sneeze at in my opinion! I always set the cruse at 60 or 62 mph and let it do it's own thing. I have also noticed that because of the extra gear in the tranny, it just sets there at about 13 or 1400 rpm and hardly moves. Climbing a grade, I did notice that it would shift down into 5th gear if the grade was steep enough. But not very often. And, the engine brake! Holy cow!!! If it is turned on and you just touch the brake pedal, it slows you right down. Especially, rolling off the 4 lane onto and around the exit, not much brake pedal needed if you time it right.
