Native South Dakotans!
DH and I are in Apache Junction, Az and last night went to dinner at Village Inn. (Very good food btw) As we had a 15 minute wait.. sat down..others get seated..new people sit beside us! Naturally new conversation.. Where from? South Dakota! So is that where you are really from? YES! We have a farm in Eastern Dakota and going back on 16th to begin again!!!
Imagine our shagrin in questioning if they were "really from South Dakota"! They were nice and were very unaware as to how the forwarding mail services worked. In fact, only heard about it in the last year and they are "our age"!
Anyone else ever had a similar experience and care to share?

We have met several folks who are "really from South Dakota". When they saw our tags, they started visiting up a storm, telling us where they were from. We had to stand there with blank looks because we didn't know where that was. Now we tell people we are "based in South Dakota".

Sounds like a plan to me Pam. Thanks.
We are in transition of establishing residence through Americas Mailbox and was wondering how that was "defined". Based sounds good to me!!! :-) LOL!

But you will be missing the boat if you don't visit that beautiful state. We are based there but have fallen in love with the state. Course I am talking about three seasons only. Don't want anything to do with the fourth.. Been there, done that.

Mynabird,
We have had similar conversations when people ask us what part of Texas are we from. We have never even been to our "hometown" of Livingston. I told someone that asked at an RV Park I was from Livingston Texas. He said he was from Lake Conroe Texas. Did he ever give me a funny look when I said I didn't know where that was. Turns out it is only 40 miles from Livingston.
When I walk through RV Parks I just assume that all of the South Dakota and Texas license plates are Fulltimers.

Our plates are from Washington, but we are more often asked what part of Montana we are from than what part of Washington.
They multiply and live amongst us! Beware!
BTW, Do they wear feather headbands and moccasins in Apache Junction?

Robbie... had that happen in Yuma a few weeks ago!!! Strange feeling when they don't get it either!
BTW regarding feather headbands and moccasins... only strange looking hats and loud shoes (not quiet like moccasins!)so they don't have to sneak up on us! Thanks for asking! :-)

We got to chatting with a lady at an overlook a few years ago who was not only a SD resident who actually lives there but also is somehow involved in politics. She lit into me when I explained our South Dakota reisdency and said she's against making it so easy for people like us to take up SD residency and it's because of people like us that Senator Tom Daschle lost his re-election bid. She's the only person we've run into from SD who has not been very friendly and welcoming to us.

From Wikipedia:
"Daschle was an early supporter of Barack Obama’s presidential candidacy, and was offered the position of Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services after the 2008 election. He was President Barack Obama's nominee to serve as the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) in Obama's Cabinet,[2] but withdrew his name on February 3, 2009 amid a growing controversy over his failure to accurately report and pay income taxes.[3] He is currently working for the global law firm DLA Piper.[4]
Guess in this case, you have to consider the source(she).
