Bingo, What you have to realize is fiber glass is poris. Doesn't matter if it is fresh or salt. With out the epox coat and then the anti foulant paint it WILL blister. The quality of the Fiberglass Gel coat is what will let you know how long it will take. Back in the day many years ago the boating industry was allowed to add a copper additive to the gel coat to prevent blistering when put in the water, well the EPA put a stop to that, thus you must epoxy and paint. When I first got my boat there was a fella that bought a new Searay and did the same thing (no protection) only kept it in for the season with protection and it blistered like a sun burn. I know that was a big investment, why take the chance.

There are a lot of articles on osmosis blistering that you can search on.

Here is one of them

If it were me I'd spend the money for a good barrier paint and anti fouling paint. I know that the paing can be expensive, but when you consider the cost to fix a blistered bottom, paint is cheap.

Good luck in your decision.

I caught it just as it was starting to blister, got it painted and I guess they dried out and went away, caught it before watyer could get throught the gel coat. I am in fresh water, it will blister. I just don't get barnacles like in salt. If you were to leave it in a month or two, then pull it, then put it back you would probably be OK. But why gamble. And that is what it is.Ask your dealer and manufacturer and see what the hull guarantee against blistering is.

Good advice Mike, I e-mailed the dealer about the bottom wax, paint and trailering and cleaning occasionally.

You might check with Bayliner...lots of the newer boats have a five year warranty against blistering.

The dealer said there is a limited lifetime warranty on the hull that does not include blistering, but they believe it may be covered for the first year. They are checking for me. Thanks a bunch for the suggestions and for leading me in the right direction.

Latest updated information, Bayliner has full hull warranty up to $20 a square foot for the first year (including blistering). Prorated for next five years, so I believe my plan with the wax for this summer will work. Dealer said they have only seen two Bayliners since 1993 with blistering problems. They gave me a long-winded explanation of esters in the gel-coat which work to prevent osmosis blistering. All in all, it was a valuable learning lesson, but better than that dealer said hull was already waxed and it is ready to go in the water Sunday!! The dealer said taking it out every two to four weeks and pressure washing, using acid for cleaning (Zing was what they recommended) and then waxing will work.
Thanks all for the advice, support and information.

I assume that it runs up on rollers and rails. Make sure to pressure wash and wax under those pressure points. You may have to build a sling system, or go to a boat yard to have that done. If you don't wax those points, well!

Decided on Teflon polish for the bottom (locals use it in place of bottom paint a lot). Fenders are aired up, fire extinguishers are mounted near the engine compartment and in the cabin by the stove. Everything is ready for maiden launch in the morning. A good show is sure to be had if anybody happens by the launch!!! Dear old dad will most likely suffer through a restless night (not only in nervous anticipation of tomorrow, but unfortunately experiencing a gout attack at the same time....Yeouch!!). Name graphics are on the boat and it is ready for immersion (after a dedication prayer of course!!). If you don't see me posting in the future, it can only be one of two things....disaster or Dad simply refuses to come back to shore. Ha!!!

They said tp pressure wash it?? Being that fiber galss is poris even if they said that is what they would do, in the 15 years I have owned my boat I have and never and would never put a pressure washer on it, just a good soft brush.

I think I will listen to your advice there Wayne and use the rotating brush at very low pressure with the washer.

Hey Bingo, how did the maiden voyage go?

Have you posted anything on that?

Bill and others,
Spent seven hours on the water Sunday with a couple of minor incidents. We got the beast in the water okay and got it docked at the slip okay, but when leaving the slip, Dad managed to forget the stern swing (similar to the trailing edge on our Montana's) and hit against the dock with the back corner near the transom door. A little scuffing but no major damage (like a dummy, I had taken the fenders in before leaving - lesson learned! At least the first scratch and hopefully last is over with!!). Had difficulties getting on plane (cruising speed) and have since found out that the lessons learned in the on-water orientation were quickly forgotten. I think I have the operation (stern drive tilt and trim tab positions) part of the process corrected now, but won't find out until this weekend. All-in-all it was a very enjoyable day. One of the neat aspects of the weekend is that our church has started to offer an additional Sunday service on Saturday evenings, so now we have a choice of boating days on the weekends we are not camping and still attend church. We had lunch and dinner on the boat. Another neat aspect is I found a secret about the boat. For some reason when cruising about 8-10 mph, DD's both underwent a tranquilizing effect and fell asleep for an hour or so!!! That even contributed more to the peaceful enjoyment of the day on the water. I am eager to try Boating 101 operational aspects that I had forgotten this weekend and attain cruising speed instead of just puttering around!! DW has emphasized though, that she enjoys the puttering around more than cruising at 35-40 mph on plane. Thanks for the interest Bill!!

One thing to remember if it starts to porpise " bow up and down" just bring the drive down a touch until it stops. You will have to play around with it for a while to find the optimum rpm-cruising-fuel economy range. On another note you can also use the tabs to gain a bit more top end.

Thanks Waldo,
We have spent the last two Sundays on the boat, and I am just starting to feel comfortable operating it. Your advice rings true as today was spent learning about adjusting sterndrive tilt on plane and the use of the trim tabs. Both myself and DW realized today that we are wearing ourselves ragged learning all of this, (I strongly hinted that we need to go camping......looks like Memorial Day will be the next available time we can get out - annual trip to Revelles in Elkins, WV) due to my work schedule. I still am amazed at the timing of our Church starting to offer an additional Sunday service on Saturday evenings.....it has freed up our Sundays and we are definitely taking advantage of it!!
