New Trailer Odor

With so many people getting brand new 5ers this year, I noticed that nobody seems to be having a problem with what I'll call "eye burn" (not sure if it's a smell or just fumes that tear your eyes, but some rigs we were looking at a couple of years ago we couldn't even take a good look at, the burn was so bad). The only time I have heard it mentioned, on MOC, was when "Connorsmom" was camping this winter. When we went to see the Collier's brand new, still at the dealer, Big Sky we didn't notice it, and none of the new 3400 or 340 owners are mentioning it (and as new as they are, I would expect it to be a problem). Has Montana/Big Sky somehow gotten around this problem? I have some extreme allergies and we're trying to determine how long we'll have to have the Big Sky aired out before we can actually USE it. Any comments pro or con from all the new trailer owners??? Thanks, Sue C

SueC2,

I don't know about the new ones, but last year when we bought ours, the "eye burn" was fierce. My wife too has allergies that seem to be extra sensitive to some things, and a week after I no longer noticed the smell or burn, it still bothered her. It took about 2 weeks before it no longer bothered her.

Perhaps it is the individual and their particular sensitivities. We noticed nothing at all when we got into our 3400 10 months ago.

We got our trailer in August...very hot, and the hotter it was, with the trailer closed, the worse the smell/eye burn. But in a couple of weeks and cooler temps, it went away.

I, too, have horrible allergies and usally new carpet bothers me real bad but when we purchased our unit several years ago, I did not have any problems. I think it is what you are allergic to that matters. Hopefully, you won't be bothered. Running your fantastic fsn should help. And although we are always concerned with to much moisture in our units, water does help to disspell allergy odors. If you are bothered, try putting out some pans or bowls of water and running the fans.
Happy trails.....................

Our 05 was bad but the 07 had no smell at all. Maybe different types of glue.

its all in the glue today so if you can leave the windows open for a week and the ceiling vent open it helps
good luck and good camping

I also have allergies around this time of year (tree pollen) but haven't noticed any problems with our new Big Sky, even after spending two days and nights in it with all the windows closed. Probably helps that it's been cool--hope to have the rig fully aired out before it gets really hot here.

David,
First time I've seen the picture of your Big Sky. Really sharp looking rig.

Definately depends on the individual. New trailers, etc., don't bother Darwin but have a severe effect on Maureen. When we got our 03 it took a good week of airing out before Maureen could handle it. Our new 07 was the same. We broke our PDI down to two 1.5 hour visits so Maureen could handle it. Got the trailer home & I have had dryer sheets spread around and the vents open for a week. I also moved all our belongings in because Maureen couldn't handle the new smell. I do think getting our stuff into the trailer helps to alter the new smell as well. After 10 days we are now god to go.

The smell and eye irritation is from the carpet's formaldehyde and adhesives used during construction. Nothing you can do to alleviate it except for airing out the vehicle the first few days of ownership. Vehicles right out of the assembly line should have the strongest smells, they go away quickly. Its sort of a way to know how new your rig is, if there's no smell its been on the lot for a while.

We did not notice it to be extremly bad in the 3585SA ...didnt use it till April and it was cold weather. Even now with temps in the 80's it is not bad...I think after they are aired out awhile it gets better.
David that Big Sky sure is nice looking!

I don't have allergies to anything, and I didn't have any problems with my previous Fleetwood TT, this one was a freakin' nightmare as you all know. But, it's nothing but a bad memory now...:-)

........kinda like the new car smell, nice in the beginning, tells you it's new, but then the new wears off, and everything should be back to the smells you're accustomed to smelling...

I went to Boat and RV world over the weekend for boat parts. When I walked in the door my eyes started watering and the smell was awful. I was surprised a dealer with an indoor showroom didn't have any ventilation to get the smell out. If your not going to have airconditioning then get some exhaust fans and open the doors. I feel sorry for the poor folks who work in that place.

We have had our 3400RL 2 weeks but not given it the test as we received it a month earlier than expected. Our friends, "fire5er" got theirs the same day and have had extreme problems and are not able to stay in it as yet. They are attempting some different ways to get the smells out.

As 05WAF350 said, we have had problems trying to spend the night in our new 3400RL due to the smells. Headache, sinus issues, etc... caused us to bail out just past midnight. Thank God we were driveway camping so we just when into the stick house to sleep. Have been airing it out and have put charcoal and kitty litter in to try to absorb some of the smells. Also turned the heat up to 80 one day and then air it out. We will keep working to rid the trailer of the bad smells.
