D/A Filters

Coming up on 5,000 miles, and although the manual does not mention it, the Allison site says the spin on filter should be changed then. Called my friendly Chevy dealer...$37.40...called my friendly Allison dealer...$7.60, no brainer on that one. Even called the dealer back, he insisted that was the correct price and that's what he had to charge.

Oil filter, no problem, they are every where...what brand does everybody use?

My problem is trying to track down a fuel filter element. Car Quest says it is over $40...others were closed. Seems a bit stiff for an element, where does everybody else get theirs?

I have all my service done through the local GMC dealership. They are a great shop to do business with and their prices are usually very close to aftermarket. I am one who likes to run with OEM equipment, just personal choice. I had my tranny changed at 25,000 miles as per the manual. At 50,000 we switched over to synthetic fluid. Getting close to 70,000 and at 75,000 will have the tranny fluid changed again. Fuel filters I have changed every 10,000 miles, cost for the entire thing is $87.55 for that. LOF runs me $55.88.

Heres a couple of online stores I've used in the past.
Only buy the dual pleated fuel filter!
http://www.lubricationspecialist.com...roducts_id=179
http://www.gmdieseltech.com/store2/c...ategory_id=252

Oil, and air I only use AC, trans filter go with OEM. Do a search lot of local Allison dealer around. Dextron 6 is what the GM dealer has, but now Allison recommends TranSynd.
http://www.allisontransmission.com/s...jsp?ThisPage=4

Auto Pro also carries AC filters. You said you have a 2007 make sure all filter numbers match your truck!SeeYa

I think Gmpartsdirect has the best price on the fuel filter if IIRC. I was getting mine for like $22 locally at the GMC dealer, but my friend has gone elsewhere to work, so I may have to order them now. As far as oil filter goes, I wouldn't use anything but AC Delco, because if you have waranty problems, first thing that they will look at is the brand filter you are using. Allison dealer always beats everyone around here on the tranny spin on filter. I've always changed my own, but that may change now.

I order mine from Filter1.com I usually oder 2 fuel, 2 oil and 1 or 2 spin ons or an air filter. If you order 6 or more they pay the shipping.

Thanks guys.
I always do my own maintenance, at least then I know it will be done correctly. Two weeks ago had the Montana dealer install a 5th Abn pin box and a Splendide 2100...neither one was put in correctly. Should have known there would be something wrong, the installation instructions for both were never opened...even had a part left over for the w/d...service manager didn't have a clue as to what it was or where it belonged.

Agree on the OEM stuff, especially in view of the 100k warranty. Going to try to track down Dextron VI, or if Dextron III can be used, and what the word is on TranSynd.

Work ethic has gotten terrible in our country. Seems the only way to get things done right is to do them yourself. And seems they always make excuses why they can't do it right.

I'd never heard of the Dexron VI, but looks like it's the latest thing. I know lots of folks use the Transynd, but it's a little pricey. I may take a look at the Dexron VI when I change fluid.

Back to the fuel filter, it is my understanding that all the dual pleat Duramax fuel filters on the market are made by Racor. I just like to have that AC Delco on it when I pull into the dealer's shop.

I order mine from Rydell Chevrolet in Centerpoint Iowa. Phone # 800 475 2277. They have a package deal, 1 fuel filter, 2 oil filters, 1 tranny filter for 44.96 plus shipping.

Like Dave I go back to GM.
My GMC dealer is the only one I would trust to do anything to my GMC. I would never trust myself. And if a warranty claim is ever needed, the GMC dealer has all the records that the service and maintenance was performed on time and the proper fluids and filters were used. It would never come down to proving that I had the neighborhood mechanic or that I did it myself. Receipts of buying the proper filters and fluid is not necessarily proof that the work was ever done or done on schedule or done properly.
Even after my warranty runs out I will still be trusting the local GMC or Chevy dealer. Been my way of doing things since a local garage changed the oil in my wife's car. Got a couple miles down the road when we realized there was a problem. The idiot mechanic forgot to put the plug back in and the 5 quarts of Quaker State was on the garage floor. Forgetting the plug was not that difficult to accept but how do you explain 5 quarts of oil laying on the floor?

Am I correct is saying the fuel filter is an 'element,' as in a replaceable paper element, or is it more like an oil filter where the entire filter is replaced?

The fuel filter is a metal cannister like the oil filter only a little bigger, and it is a real bear to change. It is not a spin on..

Illini,

Didya mean "Will?" I have a gasser, hence no replaceable fuel filter. It's buried in the gas tank with the pump. Sure wish it did have a 'real' filter.

You are sooo right about Diesel Place, GREAT site!

Puzzled by that statement. Did GM do away with the fuel filter on the gassers? Last one I had was an 03 Silverado. IIRC, it had the filter inside the frame under the driver's side.

Willie,

Yup! In '04 they did it. Funny thing was/is that some filter catalogs still show the 'frame mounted' filter as being there. I've had more than one customer try to tell me there was one, had to bring the actual service manual up to show 'em. Still can't figure out why they did away with it...cost saving?
