Is your hitch locked?

Some of you may have already thought of this but will post anyway. I had trouble seeing the locking bar behind the pin to determine if it was fully locked in place. Everything on the hitch is painted black. So I closed the hitch (with trailer disconnected) and made sure the bar was fully locked in place. Cleaned the grease from the narrow rear side of the bar and masked the area. I painted the narrow side of the bar white along the full width of the throat. Now I can see the white bar clearly and tell at a glance if it is fully locked. There has been some wear to the white paint as the bar opens and closes but it is still easier to see than the all black one.

Gives me just a little more confidence when I give the initial hitch test and easy to check during pit stops. Another thing I check during pit stops is the trailer axle hubs. I walk around the trailer and look for the usual stuff but I stop at each wheel and carefully put my hand on each hub to check for excessive heat buildup. Have found bearing and brake problems before they get expensive with this simple test. Caution, the hubs can get very hot if you have been using the brakes on long down hills just prior to the test.

Don, What type of hitch are you talking about? I have the Pullrite (non-slider verision) and I have absolutely no problems seeing when my latch is locked in place. It is almost foolproof as far as I can tell...

Many here (including myself) use an infrared thermometer to check hub, drum and tire temps. I make sure they are all relatively the same temp. If one is significantly hotter than the rest there is a problem.

I have had two hitches. The first was a Reese 15k and now I have the Lil Rocker 15k. On both you could see the bar (sorta) but it was hard to tell if it was fully locked. Now it is easy to see. If you see black in the throat (1/2" or more) you know it is not fully closed.

It just adds a little more confidence to the solid sound of the hitch locking and gives you an indicator if the locking bar hangs up before it is fully locked. Doesn't seem to be an ongoing problem but every once in awhile you read about one coming off the fifth wheel and it can get expensive. I have never had that happen YET!

I have the infrared heat gun also but usually my hands are already there and work for a quick test. The temp gun would be the next step if you suspect problems. Gives exact temps wherever you point it. Great diagonistic tool.
