8,000 ft. elevation

We will be taking our first trip West. When making a campground reservation in New Mexico the campground person asked if I had a 4X4. I said no. I asked why. He said the elevation is 8,000 feet to his campground on a gravel road.

I have a 2002 Chevy with the complete tow package. Includes a V8, Vortec 8100 8.1 engine, 3.73 rear axle ratio, Allison automatic Transmission.

Will I have a problem ?

I would think it would all depend on the how steep the climb is. What did the campground owner recommend you do? He should know.

From the sound of it he was trying to warn you that you could have a problem making the climb. Depending on the percent of the grade and just how loose the gravel is you just may need a 4 wheel drive to make the 8,000 foot climb. I'd be calling back for a better explanation.

What is the name of the campground? Maybe one of the other MOCers have been there or know of it.

What is the name of the campground? Check here to see if it is listed, and what others have said.

I have been up a lot of gravel mountain roads in NM and CO. If they are wet, they are very tough. The biggest problem I had was the ruts. It will shake the living daylights out of the trailer. The last thing you want to do, is to get stuck going up, and have to back down. I had to do that once, and it took four hours to back down one mile!
