Brake Controller

I have a 2013 Ford F350 Dulley with factory brake controller and a 2016 Montana 3720 with drum brakes. Been messing with adjusting the trailer control and I'm at the max setting without locking up the tires. Curious if that's normal with this big 5er or could I have a problem? Are most of you at max setting?

We are not at max setting. I like to let towhaul do the real work.

If the trailer is brand new with few miles, the self adjusting brakes may not be fully adjusted yet.

Or another possibility is that the rear seals are blown and brake shoes covered with grease. Had that issue with our new Montana, brakes covered with grease right from the factory.

Same here. Dexter came through for me and picked up the tab for completely new brakes, backing plate, etc.

I don't think you can lock up the wheels on pavement but you might on dirt or gravel also you might need to burnish in the brake shoes when new.

2016 Ram will not lock trailer wheels except on loose gravel.

I just finished replacing all the brake assemblies on mine. The brakes ARE self adjusting, but they've also got to be worn in a bit (seated is the word) to be completely effective. Once they are (took a 250 mile trip for ours), they won't lock the wheels up on pavement (as catskiner said), but will on a slow roll on gravel or dirt. Starting out at 3-4 mph and you should be able to feel strong braking by squeezing the paddles only on pavement (or hear dragging on dirt/gravel). Drum brakes on a heavy trailer will not stop both it and your truck quickly by themselves. You can get disc brakes if you need that, but be certain to reinforce your spring hangers & other frame parts holding everything all together too if you need to do a lot of panic stops.
