Finally getting close to break in - maybe

Depends on who you listen to, I have read some reports that a diesel is not really "broken-in" until it has over 50,000 miles, and by other reports 75,000 or so. I finally reached the first threshold today taking the rig to Fayetteville,NC for some warranty work. The 2007 Classic dually now officially surpassed the 50,000 mile mark ont he way home rig-less. Will leave the rig in HOOK's neighborhood for a month or so, not like we need it since the S&B full kitchen remodel is scheduled to start this week and is projected by the contractor for 4-5 weeks. So, a seven year old truck with 50,000 miles, I think it might last a few more years (decades??)

I figured buying a diesel pickup gave you a lifetime warranty against new truck purchases. We've got 40,000 on a 2011 that only pulls the rig so I figure that unless I get tired of it, it's the last truck we'll buy. Your are a good deal younger, however, so you may have more than one more truck in you

Congratulations on the 50k milestone. Coincidentally, my '07.5 NBS just rolled over to 50,000 today as well. And to celebrate, I got a 'service battery' message on the DIC! I love this truck. I've never kept my others long enough to need new parts.

My 06 Chev has 105000 and has had 1 glow plug replaced. I think it will probably last long enough, as I was able to get about 500000 out of my diesel tow trucks. Yet, I am just a "few days" passed 29.

Some tales die hard and this is one of them. Years ago, with the machining, materials and oil products of the day, it did take a long time to break in, or wear in (more appropriate term) engines and drive trains. Now days, thanks to superior machining processes, more advanced materials and vastly superior oil, that process is much quicker, but the end results are the same, which is to say diesels have a longevity that can't be denied. By a huge margin, owners will get tired of their truck long before they wear out it's engine and drive train.

133,000 om my '03 Dodge. As much as we would like a new one there's no reason to dump this one. Every few years I drop a few thousand in to it but it beats spending 50-60k for a new one.

I (we), have about 54,000 miles on our 2007 classic 3500 and the "Boss" said this is last truck you will get. Been a good truck so far and does mainly pulling except when we are in Arizona for 3 months when it does double duty.

480,000 plus miles on the 08 Ram 3500. We haul 3 to 4 cars on it, plus many other crazy loads, all the time. It is on a 20,000 mile oil change interval with this one. So far the only major issues have been a blown turbo hose and power steering pump. We are not easy on it, but it has more than paid for itself a few times over. The most miles we have put on a Ram was on a 2005 and that gave out at 782,xxx before the motor quit. Like others have said, we will get bored with the truck long before the truck gives out.

The F-350 is still running great; however we might be buying a truck sooner than most of you all. Actually I’m driving it full time now since we blew the engine in the PT Cruiser. Good luck with the S & B project Bingo, take the girls out a lot!

The problem with diesel pick up trucks is that by the time the engine is fully broke in the rest of the truck is falling apart!

Living in the Salt Belt, that's why I got the new one rust proofed. I can do most of the mechanical stuff, but when the body rots off, I'm helpless.

2008 F350 with 31k! It's in the shop now for coolant leak, steering issue, track bar or something like that and the front hubs wont lock in. Maybe I need to run it a little more?

There is something to be said for that. Even though I try not to use my truck in the winter, I still run it a few times on nice days to keep everything lubed and whatnot.

Just to expand on what TomS said. Being in the machine shop business you learn about such things. Years ago the machine tools and cutting tools weren't nearly as good as they are today. Cylinder bore spacing wasn't held nearly as close as it is today. Cutting tools didn't last nearly as long. In fact just a few years ago we couldn't even machine the compacted graphite iron in production. It was just to hard and wore the tools too fast. This is the material Fords new engine is made from. New CNC machines can check their work and change their own cutting tools when needed. They can work lights out. Set em up get them started turn the lights off and go home. If any thing goes wrong the machine will diagnose the problem, call the operator tell him what the problem is so he can go fix it any time day or night.

Coolant leaks are common on the 08 F-350 Diesel. We have had both the top and bottom Hose assemblies replaced but other than that it has been perfect..
We just hit the 65K mark and better than 90 % of that is with a Montana behind it.

We also traveled 62 miles to our dealer and left the Montana there for extensive repairs. The 62 miles back solo was the longest trip the truck has taken without the Montana attached, by far. Got 15MPg coming back on the Ohio TPK...never saw that before,

Okay, I used to say "our" but now have to say "my wife's" truck because she is the one who drives it the most. Her 2007 GMC Sierra 3500 Classic has 103,000+ miles on it. I have replaced 3 glow plugs and one high pressure power steering hose pump.

Truck runs great but the leather seats are showing wear because we spent 6 years enjoying them, going from state to state.



Not a happy day when the high pressure hose burst...

The glow plugs are about the only problem on the 06, 07 Dmax trucks.

Mike, the leather used on these seats is unfortunately of a poor quality. You might consider replacing them with Katzkins, which I've heard nothing but good reports about. http://katzkin.com/
