The only thing I know, is my 06 F250 diesel doesn't smell. Could it be you have a leak somewhere?

If you mean diesel exhaust does the smell subside when you put it on the recirculate mode? Also, if the exhaust leak is under the cab you might still smell this since vehicles are not completely sealed.

I can smell exhaust any time the windows are down and if it's windy and it's blown back towards the cab.

The worst case is that there is an exhaust leak and exhaust is not just being omitted at the tail pipe but in other places. I believe another cause could be an engine problem that causes more exhaust than you should be getting but you'll need a diesel mechanic to explain that one.

Is it fuel or exhaust smoke you smell?

I think you are okay bigskyjimmy. The problem he's describing and the diesel stink he's talking about is real bad.

I recall when I bought my first diesel truck and I thought I'd try to be a wiseguy and complain that I wasn't sure I wanted a diesel (they were more expensive than a gasser) because I heard they were loud and they stink. Without hesitation, the salesguy said, "Then keep the windows closed".

Modern diesels smell only a very little, but I have probably smelled what Mont is talking about, when following another diesel pickup that I think he was having a problem. I guess a head gasket is pretty bad.

I think you're okay jimmy. You'll know when you are having a problem. It will be much stronger.
